Shelly Shwiff

Our community lost a giving leader and true friend with the passing of Shelley Shwiff last week.  She courageously battled breast cancer for nine years and was surrounded by family and friends when she left us.  Shelley was the type of woman that everybody loved.  She had a heart full of care and love for others.  She touched so many people in the Dallas community with her warm smile and upbeat attitude.  Shelley put her soul into helping others through Children's Cancer Fund.  She served on the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, chaired the Luncheon and was still giving herself to the cause until the very end.  She truly made an impact in the lives of children who were also battling cancer.  She had a selfless attitude that made everybody she met love and respect her.  Shelley will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

The Betsy Project- Cure Sarcoma Now

The Betsy Project is a grassroots fundraising effort in partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston dedicated to raise money for a rare form of cancer known as leiomyosarcoma (LMS).
The project was started when Dallas resident, Betsy Vincent was diagnosed with this disease in 2006. Betsy is a delightful, wonderful woman, mother, wife, friend and a big supporter in our community, not to mention determined. Her oncologist, Joseph Ludwig told her if he had $200,000 he could then hire a research team to give complete focus to LMS -- therefore that is what our community is trying to do. This could not only be a breakthrough for LMS patients, but could find treatments for all forms of sarcoma, too.
Please help support The Betsy Project and MD Anderson Cancer Center, not to mention others afflicted with the disease.

"Not Guilty" T-shirt from Marie Claire

Women in Afghanistan are treated horrible. They are victims with no chance of justice in a country where, if convicted, the common judicial "due process" requires just two men to accuse a woman of a crime. These "moral crimes" are maddening: leaving an abusive husband's home without his permission landed an innocent woman in jail for a 10-year sentence; or being accused of having an affair or not willing to marry a rapist are just a few of the terrible examples. These moral crimes can not only lead to jail, but may be punishable by death. It is a very fair statement to say that Afghanistan may be one of the worse places to be a woman.
After an article was written in Marie Claire magazine, they were so appalled, they asked Design Bandit founder Jason Large to create the "Not Guilty" t-shirt. Purchase one for $25 and the Afghan Women's Justice Project will send the proceeds to the nonprofits helping these women and children in prison. This is for a very good cause, even though the issue is not right in front of you, plus each shirt purchased buys a child's milk for a month or school supplies for 10 prisoners. Get one or more today!

Chefs for Farmers Event No.3: Cafeteria Style

Chefs for Farmers (CFF) is coming back to Dallas for another amazing event, this time at the well-established Highland Park Cafeteria. The roster of chefs and farmers is again amazing, yet this time the vibe is old-school comfort food. Surely with chefs such as founder Matt McCallister, John Tesar, Brian Luscher of The Grape, Scott Romano of Charlie Palmer, Tim Byers of Smoke Restaurant and so many more amazing chefs from around the city, comfort food will take on a whole new amazing meaning. As always, CFF will be pairing up with some of the best farms in Texas: JuHa Ranch, Mozzerella Company, Texas Heritage Beef and Texas Honey Bee Guild.

Let the fun begin in a cafeteria setting, with a spin -- literally, as DJ Jennifer Miller and Paul Paredes set the mood, while DLynn Proctor will be serving up the drinks. Certainly sounds like a lot of fun and one can only assume that all plates will be empty after the spectacular feast that awaits.
On top of all the fun, food and drinks, a portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit The Family Place, DFW's largest family service provider. Get in line while there are still tickets available!
