Join Dallas volunteers from all over to serve neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness.

Dallas community members will come together April 19–25, 2026, for Love Your Neighbor Week, a citywide volunteer initiative hosted by The Stewpot.

The week features more than 650 service opportunities across Dallas, including meal service, food pantry support and outreach programs. Special highlights include a Neighbor Talent Show on April 23 and a family-friendly All Ages Volunteer Day on April 25.

Volunteer activities take place at The Stewpot, The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, First Presbyterian Church of Dallas and additional sites.

Liberty Street Garden Groundbreaking & Volunteer Opportunities

 

On June 29^th, The Meadows Foundation, NFNL, and Bonton Farms joined together to break ground on Liberty Street Garden (LSG), a unique social enterprise project. LSG will hire members enrolled in NFNL’s Women’s Program, providing work experience and a source of income to help survivors of trafficking and exploitation build their resumes as they rebuild their lives.

The Meadows Foundation developed the concept and provided seed funding through a grant to cover all start-up and operating costs for the first year. Bonton Farms is providing their expertise to guide the cultivation and development of the garden. NFNL is operating the project, providing the employees and volunteers to run and sustain the enterprise.

LSG will grow organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale to farmers markets, local restaurants, and the community on a one-acre plot of land centered in the Wilson Historic District near downtown Dallas.

Because of the physical nature of this activity, it’s most appropriate for those over the age of 6. Participants should wear long sleeves, pants and closed-toed shoes. Making a difference can be messy, so keep the mud in mind!

National charity Warm Up America! celebrates 30 years of providing warmth to people in need

A group of knitters and crocheters assemble at a local community shelter and hand out colorfully unique clothing and blankets to people in need. Events like this have taken place in communities all over the country for years. If they happened in the last 30 years, chances are they were sponsored by national nonprofit Warm Up America!

Warm Up America! (WUA!) was founded by Evie Rosen in 1991. Evie enjoyed making blankets for the homeless, but found she couldn't fulfill the need fast enough. Her vision was to provide an innovative way for donated 7" by 9" knitted and crocheted sections to be joined together to make finished blankets.

This seed of an idea has blossomed over the years into a national program that has provided comfort and warmth to thousands of people during their most difficult of times, earning Rosen recognition by TIME Magazine and endorsements by Oprah Winfrey and Vanna White. Over one million items have been donated by 20,000 volunteers since 1991.

"Warm Up America! touches us at our core in a time when we're all looking for things that are meaningful," expressed Mike Rosen, Evie Rosen's son. "There aren't many things that move people so deeply, whether you're the giver or the receiver. It is even more meaningful knowing these blankets arrive in the arms of individuals who are experiencing some of the lowest points in their lives."

This year is WUA!'s 30th anniversary and to celebrate, the organization is promoting a year-long fundraising campaign to raise awareness for its cause. The charity encourages volunteers to donate $30 or more to reach a goal of $90,000 - which would cover almost two years' worth of expenses for WUA! Every volunteer who donates $30 or more will receive an exclusive 30th anniversary pattern bundle that includes 90 new knit and new crochet 7" by 9" section patterns.

There are other ways to support WUA! too besides donating money, like by purchasing exclusive 30th anniversary t-shirts and tote bags or by donating hand-knitted and crocheted blankets, clothing and accessories.

JOIN: The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center

 

The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center was formed in 1962 by combining the auxiliaries from Bradford Memorial Hospital for Babies, Children’s Hospital of Texas and Richmond Freeman Memorial Clinic. In the very early days, Auxiliary volunteers assisted hospital staff in all aspects of running the hospital, from helping with admitting patients and running samples to the lab to assisting physicians.

As Children’s Medical Center grew, so did the unwavering support of the Women’s Auxiliary. Today, two strong Auxiliary chapters support the hospital’s mission to make life better for children at the Dallas and Plano campuses. To continue its tradition and rich history of service, the Auxiliary carries out this mission by raising funds for hospital priorities, offering uplifting activities for patient families, providing support and recognition to hospital staff, and raising awareness of the hospital in the community.

The Women's Auxiliary celebrates 58 years of service and over 850 members dedicated to serving the patients and families treated at Children's Health. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has contributed more than $22 million to the Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

Volunteer Opportunity: VNA Meals on Wheels Teen Board

Through a variety of volunteer projects and special events, the VNA Meals on Wheels Teen Board's objective is to assist VNA Meals on Wheels in feeding the hungry and spreading awareness about senior hunger. Currently, 70 teens from 19 Dallas high schools are on VNA Meals on Wheels Teen Board. Past service projects include making holiday gift bags, greeting cards and mugs for VNA Meals on Wheels clients and delivering space heaters.

VNA Teen Board Meetings are held at 2:30 p.m. on the 2nd Sunday of every month during the school year at the VNA Haggerty Center located at 1440 West Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75247. Due to the current global pandemic, meetings will be held via ZOOM until further notice.

PROGRAM COMMITMENTS/REQUIREMENTS

• Membership is open to all Dallas area high school students. There is an application process and up to 75 students will be selected.
• Members are asked to make a one-year commitment with the possibility of continued service throughout their high school years.
• Yearly dues are $40. Dues will cover the cost of a t-shirt and establish the general operating budget for the Teen Board. (Financial Aid Scholarships are available based on need)
• To remain active, VNA Teen Board members must attend a minimum of 5 meetings and participate in 6 service events (4 delivery routes; 2 non-delivery activities) between September and April.

Vogel Alcove is on a mission to help young children and families overcome the lasting and traumatic effects of homelessness. It is their vision that every child in our community has a home, a self-sufficient family and a foundation for success in school and life — and the clock is ticking. YOU can help.

• NEIGHBORHOOD INKIND DRIVE: Hold an In-kind donation drive for an urgent need, such as clothing items, diapers, toys, or other necessities.  Check their website for     current needs: https://vogelalcove.org/donate/urgent-needs/ 
• Examples of how to turn a drive into a fun event:
• Hold an outdoor community BBQ/cookout and have guests bring an in-kind item for the drive in exchange for food/drink.  Perhaps even have fun games to play for small donations.  
• Create a neighborhood scavenger hunt and have participants bring an in-kind item or donation to receive their instruction list.  Hold a prize drawing for all teams who successfully complete the scavenger hunt.

• VIRTUAL CHILDRENS  PLAY: Act out and record a virtual children’s story.   Select a classic children’s story and recruit your actors,  director, and film/production crew.  Keep the recording fairly short (to keep the attention span of toddlers and pre-k kiddos) and be silly, loud, fun, goofy, and energetic.  You can record and edit the films on phone or computers.  Fun is the only requirement. 

• BYE BYE BAG PROJECT: Hold a “Bye Bye Bag” building project for the children of Vogel Alcove to take back to the places they are spending the night. You can shop for the items, set up bag decorating stations, and then create an assembly line for putting the bags together.  Watch this video for more information. 

• DECORATE BIRDHOUSES:  Create a Bird House decorating contest.   For a $100 gift, you can purchase a small wooden birdhouse(s) from Vogel Alcove.  Companies, Business Departments, Individuals, or Families can then decorate the birdhouses however they wish.  The birdhouses are returned to Vogel Alcove and hang on the “Giving Trees” in their hallway.   You could create prizes for most unique, funniest, most creative, overall winner, etc.  Perhaps have people on social media vote for their favorites.

Mayor Rawlings kicked off pre-registration for Mayor's Back to School Fair

A one-stop shop to prepare children and their families for the school year, the 21^st Mayor’s Back to School Fair, presented by Walmart, will take place on Friday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Centennial Building at Fair Park.

“We want to make sure that kids are well-prepared for their first day of school,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. “Getting ready for school - buying supplies, getting immunizations and haircuts and seeing the dentist – can be overwhelming and expensive for families. We hope that the Fair can ease some of that burden, plus put kids on the right track for a successful school year.”

With an expected attendance of 35,000, the Fair is a one-stop-shop complete with all the back-to-school basics. Parents and children can find everything they need to prepare for the school year – from free school supplies for Dallas schoolchildren (who meet eligibility requirements); to free health, dental and vision screenings; to immunizations and haircuts; plus the latest information on education, health and social services. The Fair also will feature musical entertainment, kids activities, games, interactive demos and more. Eligible families with pre-K and elementary school students also will receive a colorful backpack at the Fair.

Walmart will conduct free vision screenings and offer general health screenings, including blood pressure and glucose checks, for all family members. Texas A&M University College of Dentistry will provide free dental screenings and oral health information for everyone, plus fluoride applications, toothbrushes and toothpaste to students. Dallas County Health & Human Services will provide free immunizations; the National Kidney Foundation will offer kidney health screenings; and Children’s Health will offer consultations on asthma, behavioral health, BMI readings and nutrition. Cedric B’s Barber and Beauty Salon and Ogle School of Hair, Skin and Nails will offer free haircuts to students. Essilor Vision Foundation will be on site conducting eye exams and providing eye glasses at no cost to qualifying families. In addition, Half Price Books will give away 10,000 books.
Dallas ISD will have a large area with bilingual staff on hand to provide information on magnet schools, scholarship and alternative programs, psychological and social services, parenting and family literacy.

Additionally, educational information and services, in English and Spanish, will be offered at hundreds of community resource booths on crime prevention, fire safety, college readiness, housing, transportation, personal finances, health, nutrition and literacy.

IMPORTANT: Free school supplies are available ONLY to those who meet specific eligibility requirements (must be public school students pre-K through 12th grades who reside in the City of Dallas or attend a Dallas ISD school and meet the 2017 Federal Poverty Income Guidelines). A PHOTO ID, PROOF OF RESIDENCY AND PROOF OF INCOME ARE REQUIRED TO QUALIFY.

Admission is free. Parking is free, or visitors can take the DART Rail Green Line to the Fair Park or MLK, Jr. stations. New this year: Shuttle service within Fair Park will be available to and from the Centennial Building, where the Fair’s main entrance is located. The Centennial Building at Fair Park is located at 1001 Washington St. in Dallas.
Eligible families who qualify for free school supplies are encouraged to pre-register by mail or in person at pre-registration events throughout Dallas.

New Friends New Life Announces Circle of Friends Membership Driv

New Friends New Life, a Dallas-based nonprofit that provides holistic support in the restoration and empowerment of formerly trafficked and commercially exploited teens, women, and their children, announces its annual Circle of Friends membership drive taking place throughout the month of June.
Circle of Friends memberships directly support programs for the 1,000 teen girls and women New Friends New Life serves annually. These essential resources, including access to education, job training, and financial assistance, help serve as the foundation toward building a life free from degradation and harm.

“It is a privilege that through my volunteer commitment with New Friends New Life, I can be part of the restoration and empowerment of girls who have been abused and sexually exploited right here in Dallas,” said Elizabeth Gambrell, president of the New Friends New Life Circle of Friends board. “Getting these precious lives on a road to self-sufficiency is critical. The staff at New Friends New Life is uniquely and spiritually qualified to meet these girls right where they need to be met.”

The Circle of Friends group supports the nonprofit’s mission through volunteerism, community awareness, and fundraising, and provides the Dallas community with the opportunity to join a movement that helps women and teen girls leave sex trafficking, overcome backgrounds of abuse, addiction, and poverty, and ultimately build better futures.

“Texas ranks second in the country for the most human trafficking, and there are an estimated 400 trafficked teens on the streets of Dallas each night,” explained New Friends New Life CEO Katie Pedigo. “This is a serious issue in Dallas that requires the community to stand with us to support these teen girls and women. With the help of our Circle of Friends members, our organization continues to make critical strides in ending this human rights epidemic and providing a more hopeful future to the women and girls who have been victims of degradation.”

CASA volunteers are a source of hope and support for child victims as they wait for the courts to decide where they may safely live.

 

Dallas CASA thoroughly trains its volunteers to be the best possible advocates for abused and neglected children. The volunteers complete a 30-hour training program which covers topics such as Dynamics of Child Abuse and Neglect, Advocate Responsibilities, Family Violence, Cultural Competence, Permanency Planning, Accessing Services and Court Proceedings. All classes must be completed for a volunteer to graduate and be sworn in by the court as a CASA volunteer. 

 

After completing training, Dallas CASA volunteers are teamed with a CASA staff supervisor. On average, our supervisors each have more than 15 years of experience in child welfare or a related field. Supervisors provide support and guidance to volunteers throughout their cases and are always present during court hearings.

Qualifications:	Preferred (will review on a case-by-case basis for each applicant): Experience: Service-oriented – previous experience working with a team or fundraising. Other: Communications, Social Media, Marketing, Non Profit, Business skills. Social Media: Can use smart phone platforms, databases, Microsoft office suite, other social media savvy sites.

Nexus Recovery Center is a Dallas non-profit at the forefront of specialized substance abuse services for females. The mission of Nexus Recovery Center is to serve as a link to sobriety, independence and dignity for low-income women and their families. We inspire hope, offer respect, and honor the unique differences of female addicts.

In FY2014, Nexus served 2,275 women and adolescents girls. Many utilized multiple programs in our continuum of care. In addition, Nexus served 477 children who had accompanied their mothers into treatment; 72 babies were born with healthy birth outcomes while their mothers were in treatment. www.nexusrecovery.org.
