Luncheon and Fashion Show

Each fall KidneyTexas, Inc. hosts its Luncheon & Fashion Show in an effort to raise money for designated beneficiaries and awareness for a disease that affects millions of people each year. The success of this event depends heavily upon the contributions and dedication of our Dallas business and community leaders. Your support is crucial to the success of our mission.

The luncheon and fashion show will begin with a champagne reception followed by a program and runway fashion show produced by Robyn Chauvin Productions with fashions from NorthPark Center which is always a fabulous event including fun surprises. There will be an auction, raffle and award presentations. It is all topped off with a delicious luncheon.

Meet Our Heroes, the Wolebens

Doug and Kasey sat at a conference table as a team of doctors broke the news: Their then 18-month-old son had a rare disease that was causing him to fall and be unable to get up. 

A few days earlier, Kasey had rushed their son, Will, to the Emergency Room at Children’s Medical Center Plano after one of these falls, knowing in her gut something wasn’t right.  

Doctors told the couple that the rare disease -- called Leigh syndrome, which impacts only a few thousand people in the world -- was progressive, had no cure and many patients didn’t live past the age of 10.  

And ever since then, for the last seven years, Doug and Kasey have been trying to save their son’s life.  

“I don’t think any parent could accept that there’s no cure for your child,” Doug said. “We had to do what we could to try to find an answer.”  

They emailed academic researchers in the United States and internationally. They called drug companies. They drove to different cities in hope of an experimental treatment.  

But every answer was the same: “There’s nothing we can do to help you.”  

Kasey and Doug have watched their now 9-year-old son lose the ability to walk, lose the ability to swallow and eat food and lose the ability to speak. They monitor his various medications and feeding tubes, while also caring for their youngest child, Lauren. And every night, one of them sleeps in a twin bed in Will’s room.  

The family found hope in 2018 when their neurologist told them about the development of a Gene Therapy program starting at UT Southwestern in collaboration with Children’s Health.  

“We had reached out to many top medical institutions, hospitals and researchers throughout the country, but Children’s Health was the one that was willing to say, ‘Yes, we can help you,’” Doug said.  

But the couple would need to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to launch the experiments and another $1 million for human trials. 

It wasn’t a cure – only an experiment. They don’t know if it will work. And they don’t know if it will manifest in time to help their son.  

But they had to try.  

“To go from being diagnosed with this ultra-rare disease, where we thought, ‘How unlucky can we be?’” Doug said. “To having this potential miracle breakthrough presented to us right in our own backyard in Dallas, it feels like we hit the lottery.” 

Kasey and Doug are fundraising not only to save their son’s life, but for the lives of other children and families like them navigating a rare disease diagnosis.  

So far, the family – joined by other rare diagnosis families – have raised more than $1 million and hope to have a clinical trial launch soon.  

“We tell Will about this therapy that we’re fundraising for. We tell him that we don’t know what the results are going to be. But he knows there’s hope,” Kasey said.  

“We survive on hope.”

The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center was formed in 1962 by combining the auxiliaries from Bradford Memorial Hospital for Babies, Children’s Hospital of Texas and Richmond Freeman Memorial Clinic. In the very early days, Auxiliary volunteers assisted hospital staff in all aspects of running the hospital, from helping with admitting patients and running samples to the lab to assisting physicians.

As Children’s Medical Center grew, so did the unwavering support of the Women’s Auxiliary. Today, two strong Auxiliary chapters support the hospital’s mission to make life better for children at the Dallas and Plano campuses. To continue its tradition and rich history of service, the Auxiliary carries out this mission by raising funds for hospital priorities, offering uplifting activities for patient families, providing support and recognition to hospital staff, and raising awareness of the hospital in the community.

The Women's Auxiliary celebrates 58 years of service and over 850 members dedicated to serving the patients and families treated at Children's Health. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has contributed more than $22 million to the Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “Sweet 30th Anniversary”

The Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “Sweet 30^th Anniversary” celebrates 30 years of sweet smiles, sweet styles, and sweet stories of survival in a candy-themed wonderland.  The Gala will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas (new location this year) beginning at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and VIP reception and 7 p.m. for the dinner and program.

Co-Chairs Candice Romo and Hollie Siglin join longtime Honorary Co-Chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman to kick off the evening.  The event is expected to raise more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Health and UT Southwestern. Staubach, who has been involved all 30 years, and Aikman, now in his 21^st year, join other celebrities and sponsors as runway escorts for 22 featured pediatric cancer patients, ages 5 – 15, who model fashions by Dillard’s for the annual fashion show, produced by RSC Productions.

The evening features the Ray Johnston Band and concludes with dancing and music provided by the Jordan Kahn Orchestra and special Guest DJ Tony Romo, CBS NFL Commentator and former Dallas Cowboy.

The gala, which is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, is sponsored by CBS 11 and features Karen Borta as mistress of ceremonies. Since 1982, Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $8 million to the childhood cancer cause. Individual tickets are $300 or $2,750 for a table of 10. Co-Chairs Romo and Siglin are also moms and best friends who are passionate about championing children.  The mission of Children’s Cancer Fund and the importance of this fundraiser led them both to say yes when asked to be this year’s co-chairs of the gala.

“With a passion for children and a love of fashion, my heart is happy to be part of the Children’s Cancer Fund 30^th Anniversary Fashion Show,” said Candice Romo.

A native Texan and Dallas resident, Romo has three sons with Tony Romo. She is co-owner with Siglin of Hawk + Sloane, a line of children’s sprays they created. Siglin and her husband, Chris, reside in West Plano and also have three children.

Children’s Cancer Fund brings together local celebrities, dignitaries, philanthropists, sponsors, and media personalities to serve as runway escorts for these young patients modeling in the fashion show. In addition to Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, escorts include Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys players and cheerleaders and Rowdy, the Cowboys mascot, as well as Juanika & Monta Ellis (of the Indiana Pacers, NBA); Kiss FM Crew (Kellie Rasberry, Big Al, JC and Jenna); Miss Texas Margana Wood; Medieval Red Knight; Pink Heals Firefighters; Batman; Dallas SWAT; Dallas Fire Station #19; Belle of Beauty and the Beast; and Children’s Cancer Fund alum Russell McKeown.

“This night is all about the kids,” said Jennifer Arthur, CCF Executive Director of Development. “They spend the day getting runway ready and reuniting with their friends backstage, and when the spotlight comes on, you will see some of the sweetest smiles. This is a night they have looked forward to all year. The grand finale, which features CCF models from the past 30 years, is one of the most incredible moments of the evening. These sweet stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.”

Volunteer Coordinator

Position Summary

This position is responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, placement and ongoing management of volunteers along with managing relationships with areas of volunteer service throughout Children's Health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop strategic relationships with various departments and areas of service throughout the organization to provide placements for volunteer service. This includes developing and maintaining successful volunteer positions, training, and ongoing management efforts.
• Recruit appropriate individual volunteers and groups throughout the community to fulfill the volunteer needs of the organization.
• Select and onboard volunteer candidates. This includes facilitating various orientation sessions, reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, assessing appropriate roles and ensuring all training is completed.
• Maintain volunteer records to ensure that they are up to date including annual background checks, annual training, annual performance evaluations, annual health check and ongoing communication efforts with volunteers.
• Provide ongoing supervisory responsibilities for volunteers; addressing performance issues, recognizing successes and problem solving issues as they arise.
• Represent Children's Health in interactions with the community at large through work with service groups, corporate donors, local schools/universities, the Women's Auxiliary to Children's Medical Center, non-profit service organizations, donors and many others.
• Insure that all regulatory and compliance related policies, guidelines and procedures are followed. This includes education of staff in other departments and volunteers on how regulatory standards affect them.
• Serve as a resource for organizational problem solving.

Education

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in Social Services, Public Relations or Business, is required.

Second Annual Legacy of Love Featured Spring Fashions and Savory Bites

On April 16, The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center, Legacy Chapter, partnered with Park Place Lexus and TOOTSIES to host the second annual Legacy of Love Benefit, Fashion Show and luxury raffle. The event took place at the Park Place Lexus dealership in Plano.

Over 300 guests attended and enjoyed a fashion show directed by RSC Show Productions featuring spring fashions available at TOOTSIES, along with delicious savory bites, with dessert specially provided by Seasons 52 plus a specialty vodka drink offered by Deep Eddy Vodka.

2011 Children's Medical Center Holiday Parade

Bring your family and friends to the 24th annual Children's Medical Center Holiday Parade in downtown Dallas on December 3 at 10:00 am. Proceeds from the parade benefit the young patients treated at Children's. It is co-presented by Capital One Bank and Pizza Hut Inc. and is the largest annual event in downtown Dallas.

This year's celebrity performer is none other than Jordin Sparks, the artist who sang the opening theme song to Children's Med Dallas.

For the best view of the parade, guarantee your bleacher seats today. For those not purchasing reserved tickets, sidewalk seating is available along the parade route, and officials recommend arriving before 7 a.m. to secure a good spot.
