The Wilkinson Center strives to help people find their way out of poverty. The organization has distributed more than 5 million pounds of food since its inception. It also offers GED, ESL, and computer and financial literacy classes, as well as after-school programs.

Lecture Series: What is a Virtuous Citizen

THE EVENT: The City of Imagination lecture series is set for Tuesday, November 2^nd. The series is presented by the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility and The Dallas Institute. This month, guests are encouraged to attend “WHAT IS A VIRUOUS CITIZEN?” with Dr. Louise Cowan, Dr. Scott Crider, and Dr. Larry Allums. The title and theme of this month’s lecture questions the concept of virtue. The speakers will present a lecture on what it means to be a virtuous citizen, physician, lawyer, businessperson, statesman, or journalist. After each speaker discusses a topic, panelists will respond and the audience can join in discussion.

THE DETAILS: Per lecture it is $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers, and $5 for member teachers/students.

TIME AND PLACE: The event begins at 7:30 pm and is held at the Dallas Institute at 2719 Routh Street.

UNICEFF Makes a Difference with Not My Life

It is simple to pay close attention to an issue when it is sitting in front of us, but what happens when we are not constantly reminded of these less than rosey realities? They are forgotten.

UNICEFF is giving us a chance to take part in an event that will further educate us on modern day slavery and human trafficking. Human trafficking is a horrifying issue that is practiced globally and hidden carefully. Yes, the topic is mentioned in novels, films, and news stories, but it will take more than a mention for the public to take proper action against the growing reality. Susan Bissell, Chief of Child Protection, will be the first speaker in a series of luncheons in the Dallas- Fort Worth area, and she will speak about the documentary, Not My Life. Not My Life is a feature- length documentary that will inform audiences about the children, women, and men who endure physical and emotional abuse that we can only imagine, and we have only heard about. 15th Annual Treasure Street Event Raises More Than $1 Million For TSRHC

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) proudly announces that the 15th annual Treasure Street, the hospital’s signature event, raised more than $1 million this year. All proceeds from Treasure Street, presented by Northern Trust, benefit the patients at TSRHC.
More than 1,200 people attended the 2010 Treasure Street in a magical tent on the grounds of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

On Thursday, October 7, guests enjoyed a spectacular night filled with live and silent auction items, music by DJ Lucy Wrubel and delicious southern cuisine. The event’s live auction gave attendees the opportunity to bid on items such as four courtside owner’s seats to the Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks basketball game, a 2004 Victory motorcycle designed by Arlen Ness and autographed by NASCAR legend Kyle Petty, an iPod loaded with 2,000 of DJ Lucy Wrubel’s favorite songs as well as an original painting titled “Decade of Love” created by TSRHC patients and local artist Christopher H. Thousands of walkers, runners and joggers will take steps to end homelessness in Dallas at the 4th Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon & 5K. New this year is the addition of a 5K Run through Downtown Dallas. In addition, there will be a family fun walk, food, music and other fun activities.

Back by popular demand is Vocal Trash, an amazing group of musicians playing high octane music that will definitely get hearts pumping. New this year is the Good Neighbor Kids’ Zone, which will include zaniness from affable clown duo Slappy and Monday, dazzling performances from Lone Star Circus, face painters, interactive games, crafts and more!

Come enjoy a wonderful breakfast with Cheryl Forberg, RD, Award Winning Cookbook author and nutritionist for NBC's The Biggest Loser. If you are a fan of this popular show, you can ask Cheryl questions about what takes place when the cameras are not rolling on the ranch and learn weight loss tips that Cheryl teaches to the Biggest Loser contestants. All proceeds from this event will go to the American Institute of Wine and Food's Days of Taste Program. The program was modeled after one in France and quickly picked up in our own country, now Days of Taste Dallas helps fourth and fifth graders from the Dallas public schools discover the farm to table concept as well. These students tour the wonderful Dallas Farmer's Market and meet with local farmers and chefs who help to teach them about the delicious local produce and how to grasp enthusiasm for local, fresh ingredients.
