A Night for Nexus

Join Nexus Recovery Center in support of their mission to serve as a link to sobriety, independence, and dignity for low-income women and their families affected by addiction at “A Night For Nexus” presented by the Preston Center Rotary Club and chaired by Jennifer Davis Long and Janet Franks LaBarba.

           Slated for Thursday, September 14 at Old Parkland in the elegant Pecan Room, this special evening will be a fun-filled night of cocktails, seated dinner, bidding in the live and silent auctions and dancing to the tunes of the Downtown Fever Band.

           Becca Crowell, president of Nexus Recovery Center said Nexus inspires hope, offers respect, and honors the unique differences of female addicts. In 2016, Nexus served 2,310 women and teen and 333 children, including 62 Nexus born babies. Nexus Recovery Center is currently the only facility in North Texas providing residential drug treatment services to adult women and teen girls with accompanying children or those in a late term pregnancy.

Women's Auxiliary of Nexus Recovery Center Announces Honorary Chair and Guest Speaker for Spring Luncheon

Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus Recovery Center recently announced plans for their 2016 Spring Luncheon.  The women's group is celebrating 20 years of service, giving and raising awareness for Nexus Recovery Center.

 

The luncheon will be held on April 21, 2016 at 11:30am at Dallas Country Club.

Honorary Chair is Candice Romo - advocate and supporter of Nexus Recovery Center and wife of Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo.

This year's Guest Speaker is Steve Ford, son of former President Gerald R. Ford and Betty Ford.  Ford has successfully negotiated the bumpy road from the White House to a successful 20-year career as an actor in Hollywood.

 

A teenager when his father assumed the reins of the presidency from Richard Nixon, Ford left the White House at age 18 to pursue his dream of being a cowboy on cattle ranches out West, followed closely by his ten secret service agents. He later went on to a successful acting career, appearing in over 30 movies.

 

One of Ford's most rewarding roles has been that of student motivational speaker. Taking time off from his Hollywood career, he began traveling across the country to urge students to empower themselves against harmful influences. He walks students through the early habits he formed during his middle school, high school, and college years that led to his alcohol addiction and he shares tools and actionable tasks that led him to regain a life of personal integrity.

Gloria Campos to Help The Westapher Fundraiser Celebrate 50 Years

The Westapher Dinner & Auction, chaired by Dotti Reeder, will be held at the stunning Preston Hollow estate of philanthropist Faye Briggs. The cocktail occasion will consist of a silent auction and Cowboys Auctioneers will lead in a lively live auction. Legendary news personality, Gloria Campos, will emcee the dinner and auction where she will share the message and mission of Nexus Recovery Center and introduce a special testimony from one of the Nexus clients.

The 50^th Annual Westapher Golf Charity Tournament follows the day after the Westapher Dinner and Auction. The calendar milestone tournament will be held at Cowboys Golf Club and chaired by Jeff Winker and Roger Wyche. The tournament consists of four player teams, lunch and a scramble awards dinner that follows. The winning team will win the sought after Westapher golf trophy designed by renowned local bronze sculptor Robert Hogan who has placed his work at Cooper Fitness Center, City of Highland Park and Blue Bell Creamery among other Texas locations. Each year the trophy is passed on to the tournament’s winning team who can boast the trophy for 365 days.

Banking Presidents in DFW, with help of Texas Ranger Alum Jose Guzman, establish first-ever annual Softball Slam

The challenge is ON! The first-ever Dallas Bankers Softball Slam to benefit Nexus Recovery Center will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Texas Rangers Youth Ball Park in Arlington from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  

Bankers are such a competitive bunch, so when Ryan McCuller – Senior Vice President at Merrill Lynch - wanted to do something to help teen girls and women living with addiction at Nexus Recovery Center in Dallas, he thought …“if we build it – they will come”.

Only six slots are available for bank teams who will play for bragging rights and spoils including BBQ, brewery tours and a rather elaborate bankers-themed trophy. Bank Presidents are asked to sponsor a team of up to 10 players. One hundred percent of funds raised through sponsorships will be invested in Nexus Recovery Center’s residential addiction recovery programs for women and young girls. The goal is to raise $100,000 in the first year.

Jay Clingman – President, Dallas Region JP Morgan CHASE Bank, accepts the sponsorship challenge from Jose Guzman to raise awareness and funds for Nexus Recovery Center. Guzman has offered to record Public Service Announcements in Spanish, to raise awareness with Latina teen girls that have experienced major trauma from abuse, trafficking, abandonment and undiagnosed mental health challenges, about the treatment available to them from this 44 year old non-profit.

McCuller asked Gerry Mecca, VP of IT and Client Services for Dr Pepper Snapple (who is well known for his love of all things “above the diamond”), to be this year’s Honorary Chair.  Scott Jones, President of Regions Bank serves on the Board of Nexus Recovery Center and is rallying fellow Bankers to engage in some good-natured competition, all for a good cause. Jones is serving as Sponsorship Chair for this first bankers slam. Anyone can come and watch the games – there is free admission.

 

The Dallas Bankers Softball Slam is sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, DR PEPPER SNAPPLE Group, Regions Bank and Lakewood Brewery. Former Texas Ranger Alumni - Jose Guzman has been delivering sponsorship packets to bankers personally this week to advocate for the agency and for the project.

In FY2014, Nexus served 2,275 women and adolescents girls. Many utilized multiple programs in our continuum of care. The luncheon began with a VIP reception and meet-and-greet with featured speaker and New York Times best selling author Koren Zailckas. As guests then entered the ballroom for lunch, mistress of ceremonies and Fox4-TV’s weekend anchor, Jenny Anchondo, welcomed patrons before introducing Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus president Lauren Gillette.  Ms. Gillette extended her gratitude to everyone for their support of the luncheon before sharing the role of the Women’s Auxiliary in raising funds, awareness and volunteer support for the important programs for women provided by Nexus Recovery Center.

 Attendees enjoyed a seated lunch of chicken breast with Herbs de Provence over field greens with artichoke, orange, shaved fennel and goat cheese with lemon-herb vinaigrette.  As dessert of parfaits was served, former Nexus client, Katie, moved the audience with her own personal story of recovery at Nexus Recovery Center, her life now that she has been sober for five years, as well as her plans for her bright future with her daughter.

Koren Zailckas, candidly shared her experiences as written in her highly regarded book, Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood, a riveting account of her personal story of alcohol abuse as a teenager and college student. As the luncheon came to a close, chair Liz Pasquinelli was joined on stage by Ms. Gillette as they announced Lindsay Billingsley as the lucky winner of diamond and amethyst flower earrings donated by Robin Bagwell.

Nexus Recovery Center announced Koren Zailckas, New York Times best selling author of Smashed:  Story of a Drunken Girlhood and Mother, Mother, as the featured speaker for the Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Belo Mansion located at 2101 Ross Avenue in Dallas. 

 

The luncheon benefiting Nexus Recovery Center will be chaired by Liz Pasquinelli with honorary chairperson Diane Sealy, who is long-standing Nexus supporter and past president of the Nexus Women’s Auxiliary.  Luncheon highlights include a VIP reception and seated lunch followed by remarks from Ms. Zailckas as she shares her personal experiences as written in her book with an emphasis on youth and addiction. 

 

“We are so honored to have Koren Zailckas as our guest speaker for the Nexus Women’s Auxiliary luncheon.  I had the pleasure of hearing Koren speak five or six years ago at a parent event at my children’s school.  As a mother of three teenage daughters her story certainly resonates with me and I know that all in attendance will benefit from hearing her experiences as a young woman battling alcoholism,” remarked Liz Pasquinelli, luncheon chair.  “My hope for this year’s luncheon is that we continue the dialogue about addiction and alcoholism and its prevalence in our society.”

 

Koren Zailckas is the author of the New York Times Bestseller Smashed:  Story of a Drunken Girlhood, a riveting account of her experiences with alcohol abuse as a teenager and college student, at its follow-up, Fury.  Barnes and Noble selected Smashed for its 2005 Discover Great New Writers program and Entertainment Weekly named it “one of the best accounts of addiction, let alone the college experience, or even what it means to be an average teenage girl in America.”  Zailckas’ latest book, Mother, Mother:  A Novel is her debut work of fiction about a family torn apart by a deeply flawed mother.

Volunteer Opportunity: Community Member Panel at Nexus Recovery Center

Nexus Recovery Center has assisted more than 20,000 women, adolescents, and children on their journey to recovery since 1971. Parenting classes, family education and counseling, life skills training, and on-site childcare, combined with Nexus' award-winning, accredited treatment programs provide the tools to restore lives and create healthy tomorrows for families.

Located on 12 acres in east Dallas, their campus includes three dormitories, a childcare center, a medical clinic, two playgrounds, outdoor recreation facilities, a cafeteria, group rooms, outpatient center, an aftercare center, administration, an auditorium, a classroom for adolescents and laundry facilities.
Nexus is a Dallas non-profit at the forefront of specialized substance abuse services for females, offering programs for adult women and adolescent girls ages 13 to 17, including those pregnant or accompanied by children. It is one of the few programs nationally that invites women to bring their children into treatment.

Nexus Recovery Center Hosted Second Women’s Forum on Teen Female Addiction at Communities Foundation of Texas

Nexus Recovery Center hosted their second annual Women’s Forum on Teen Female Addiction presented by the President’s Society of Nexus. Nexus Recovery Center Hosts Education Forum on Adolescent Addiction

Nexus Recovery Center is hosting their second annual Women’s Forum on Teen Female Addiction presented by the President’s Society of Nexus.

 

The 2014 forum is entitled The Addicted Teen – Brain Disease and Implications for Families and is sponsored by AT&T, Briggs Freeman Sotheby's and CoHost Catering. The lunch event is being held at the Communities Foundation of Texas Mabel Peters Caruth Center, on October 10, 2014. Registration is at 11:30 a.m., and the program starts at 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. The forum is complimentary to all guests, and lunch is provided.

The Nexus Women’s Forum on Addiction brings to light the plight of women and young girls in Dallas, ages 13-17, who are addicted to drugs and alcohol and suffer from trauma such as physical or sexual abuse, incarceration, homelessness and abandonment—and how that is impacting our city, community and families.  

 

Introductory speakers are Rebecca Crowell, Nexus’ Executive Director and event Chair Becky Frey.  Attendance will primarily be women community and business leaders, philanthropists, politicians, chamber representatives, educators, media, and executives from Dallas and surrounding areas.

 

The feature speaker is adolescent addiction specialist David Atkinson, M.D. Dr. Atkinson is one of the country’s most highly rated doctors, specializing in addiction psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. He completed medical school at the University of Texas at Houston Medical School and completed his fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.

Nexus Matching Funds Campaign -- $100,000 Goal

Nexus Recovery Center is seeking new community support to raise $100,000 to leverage two recent gifts from local foundations.  The Meadows Foundation granted $200,000 to Nexus for programs and services, and of that funding – $50,000 must come from new donors.  In addition, Hoblitzelle Foundation granted Nexus with $50,000 for their capital campaign to provide new bathrooms and services in the main Building A, that houses admissions, reception and counseling rooms for clients. However a match challenge has been issued – and it must come from a new funder source – the donor could double their investment in Nexus and the community.

In an open letter, Nexus explains their needs are real and they have served 11% more women and children this year that last year, providing vital and life saving proven services to some 2,263 clients and their children who are in our programs.

In addition, long-time supporters Linda and Steve Ivy (President of Heritage Auction) have given $100,000 to Nexus to provide vital services on the La Prada campus. The Ivy's have been involved with Nexus for years through the Women's Auxiliary. Linda serves on the Nexus Board, and they both served as Chairs of the 2013 Annual Appeal.
