Bryan’s House “Pathways to Inclusion” — Luncheon, Awards and Special Needs Summit is Chaired by Betty Regard.

Betty advocates strongly for Bryan’s House and our programs. She currently serves on the boards of The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, The Hockaday School, the Family Place Endowment Board, Chiapas International, and co-chairs the Advisory Board of the Dallas Women’s Foundation.

Regard is a graduate of The Hockaday School, SMU, and has a Master’s degree in Counseling Education from the University of North Texas. She has worked as a counselor at local nonprofits and is very active in her community.

The Army Scholarship Foundation United for Heroes Mother Daughter Fashion Show and Tea

Bring a friend and join in supporting the second annual United for Heroes Tea and Mother Daughter Fashion Show on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the fabulous Belo Mansion in Dallas to benefit the Army Scholarship Foundation and provide educational opportunities for our military families.

          

Chaired by Rose Gault, President of the Army Scholarship Foundation with Carmaleta Whiteley Felton as Advisory Chair, this event is crucial to help provide funding for scholarships for the children and spouses of Army families and is supported by numerous sponsors and underwriters. 
          

Honorary Chairs are Lucy Billingsley and Carmen Hancock.   This year’s Mother Daughter Fashion Show will feature the latest spring and summer  fashionable frocks and more styles from Betty Reiter and children’s fashions from Kidbiz.

          

Models include business and community leaders and friends who will be walking the fashion runway along with their children showcasing the latest styles.  A special musical tribute will be presented by Ellen Batch of Cherry Valley, California.

Since 2001, the Army Scholarship Foundation has provided hundreds of academic scholarships to military family members.  The Foundation was established in 2001 by a group of Army veterans to serve our military families by helping children and spouses of soldiers fulfill their dreams of higher education.

Our Own Kimberly Schlegel Whitman to Keynote Dallas Junior Forum's 40th Anniversary Spring Luncheon

Dallas lifestyle expert, author and philanthropist Kimberly Schlegel Whitman will provide the keynote address titled, “Adventures in Philanthropy:  How Trying To Give Back Changed My Life And Career,” at the Dallas Junior Forum 40^th Anniversary spring luncheon on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (silent auction at 11 a.m., lunch at noon, Whitman to speak at 1 p.m.), at the Belo Mansion and Pavilion, 2101 Ross Ave., Dallas.  Luncheon chair is Mary Cartwright, and WFAA’s Jane McGarry is mistress of ceremonies.

 “Kim Whitman represents a new generation of volunteers involved in service to others,” said Mary Cartwright, luncheon chair.  “Her giving spirit matches Dallas Junior Forum's mission to benefit children, families and the elderly in need in the greater Dallas area, and her servant’s heart coupled with her creativity and enthusiasm will, without a doubt, inspire our attendees as we gather to celebrate 40 years of service in North Texas.”

Whitman, a graduate of Southern Methodist University, donates her time to many charitable organizations.  She currently serves on the advisory board of New Friends New Life as well as the board of the North Texas Food Bank, where she is a member of the committee for the newly announced “Stop Hunger Build Hope” $55 million capital campaign and former chair of Food 4 Kids. She has also served on the board of the American Red Cross. Her honors include the American Heart Association's Volunteer of the Year Award, Northwood University's Distinguished Women's Award, Texas Woman's University's Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, The Little Flower Organization of New York's Women Who Make A Difference Award, and the Women That Soar Award. Ms. Whitman has appeared on radio and TV, and in 2011, she became the Editor-At-Large of Southern Living Magazine. She has published seven books which will be available for purchase at the event.

The Dallas Junior Forum (DJF), a non-profit volunteer organization for women in North Texas that employs no paid staff, is one of nine chapters of Junior Forums – Texas based service organizations originating in Houston in 1959.  DJF was founded in 1977 to create greater interest in civic, educational and philanthropic endeavors in the North Texas community through volunteer work focused on children, families and the elderly. 

 

Organizations served by the Dallas Junior Forum include Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, The Ebby House, Juliette Fowler Communities, Frisco Family Services, Hope’s Door New Beginnings Center, Interfaith Family Services, Network, PediPlace, and the Ronald McDonald House.

 

“Our volunteers enjoy everything from preparing 8,000 meals each year at Ronald McDonald House to providing companionship to elderly residents of Juliette Fowler Communities,” added Cartwright. “Each year we support Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center as volunteers for the national Crimes Against Children Conference.  We also enjoy setting up apartments for the working-poor residents at Interfaith Family Services while also staffing the in-house clothing boutique for adults seeking employment. At Ebby House, we sponsor and furnish bedrooms for the young women residing there, who were formerly in foster homes, and mentor them in life skills and career planning. There is truly something for everyone looking to make a difference in the lives of others, and we invite anyone looking to give back in the community to join us and consider becoming a member.”

Since it began 40 years ago, DJF has donated hundreds of thousands of volunteer service hours to the charitable agencies it supports. In 2016 alone, members volunteered more than 16,400 hours. Over the years DJF has donated more than $1 million in direct grants and non-grants to worthy non-profit organizations throughout North Texas.

Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus 2015 Spring Luncheon Recently Held at Belo Mansion {Society Pics}

The luncheon began with a VIP reception and meet-and-greet with featured speaker and New York Times best selling author Koren Zailckas. As guests then entered the ballroom for lunch, mistress of ceremonies and Fox4-TV’s weekend anchor, Jenny Anchondo, welcomed patrons before introducing Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus president Lauren Gillette.  Ms. Gillette extended her gratitude to everyone for their support of the luncheon before sharing the role of the Women’s Auxiliary in raising funds, awareness and volunteer support for the important programs for women provided by Nexus Recovery Center.

 Attendees enjoyed a seated lunch of chicken breast with Herbs de Provence over field greens with artichoke, orange, shaved fennel and goat cheese with lemon-herb vinaigrette.  As dessert of parfaits was served, former Nexus client, Katie, moved the audience with her own personal story of recovery at Nexus Recovery Center, her life now that she has been sober for five years, as well as her plans for her bright future with her daughter.

Koren Zailckas, candidly shared her experiences as written in her highly regarded book, Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood, a riveting account of her personal story of alcohol abuse as a teenager and college student. As the luncheon came to a close, chair Liz Pasquinelli was joined on stage by Ms. Gillette as they announced Lindsay Billingsley as the lucky winner of diamond and amethyst flower earrings donated by Robin Bagwell.

 

Proceeds from the luncheon will support Nexus Recovery Center’s programs and ongoing mission to serve as a link to sobriety, independence, and dignity for low-income women and their families affected by addiction.

Nexus Recovery Center - Women's Auxiliary Spring Luncheon

Nexus Recovery Center announced Koren Zailckas, New York Times best selling author of Smashed:  Story of a Drunken Girlhood and Mother, Mother, as the featured speaker for the Women’s Auxiliary of Nexus Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Belo Mansion located at 2101 Ross Avenue in Dallas. 

 

The luncheon benefiting Nexus Recovery Center will be chaired by Liz Pasquinelli with honorary chairperson Diane Sealy, who is long-standing Nexus supporter and past president of the Nexus Women’s Auxiliary.  Luncheon highlights include a VIP reception and seated lunch followed by remarks from Ms. Zailckas as she shares her personal experiences as written in her book with an emphasis on youth and addiction. 

 

“We are so honored to have Koren Zailckas as our guest speaker for the Nexus Women’s Auxiliary luncheon.  I had the pleasure of hearing Koren speak five or six years ago at a parent event at my children’s school.  As a mother of three teenage daughters her story certainly resonates with me and I know that all in attendance will benefit from hearing her experiences as a young woman battling alcoholism,” remarked Liz Pasquinelli, luncheon chair.  “My hope for this year’s luncheon is that we continue the dialogue about addiction and alcoholism and its prevalence in our society.”

 

Koren Zailckas is the author of the New York Times Bestseller Smashed:  Story of a Drunken Girlhood, a riveting account of her experiences with alcohol abuse as a teenager and college student, at its follow-up, Fury.  Barnes and Noble selected Smashed for its 2005 Discover Great New Writers program and Entertainment Weekly named it “one of the best accounts of addiction, let alone the college experience, or even what it means to be an average teenage girl in America.”  Zailckas’ latest book, Mother, Mother:  A Novel is her debut work of fiction about a family torn apart by a deeply flawed mother.

Voice of Hope 2015 Annual Dinner: Can You Hear the Voices?

Voice of Hope’s (VOH) 2015 Annual Dinner: Can You Hear the Voices? will be held on January 29 at the Belo Mansion, 2101 Ross Avenue. A reception starts at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraising event will help the organization fulfill its mission to educate and build strong character in children and to equip families with resources and skills needed to overcome and break the poverty cycle.

 

Ed Franklin, president and CEO of Voice of Hope, said, “Since 1982 Voice of Hope has been serving and helping West Dallas families to break the cycle of poverty, give them hope, and transform the community. This fundraiser enables us to continue this important work.”

 

Following dinner, Ray Nixon, a long-time Voice of Hope supporter, will moderate a panel honoring three inspiring voices of the community:

Voice of Hope will give two awards to students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership and their lives. Given to a graduate of the Voice of Hope program, the “Voice of Achievement Award” will be presented to Clifton Wilson who credits his experience at the organization for setting him on the path of success. After working his way through college to receive a B.S. from Prairie View A&M University, he worked for Jefferson Properties Incorporated as a market research analyst. Then he joined the Foundation for Community Empowerment where he saw the impact and importance of investing in educational initiatives. Being the beneficiary of life-changing guidance through Voice of Hope, he sought to pay it forward and became a special education teacher in Dallas ISD for four years. He currently teaches in that same capacity at Irving ISD. He’s furthered his education by receiving a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas and has plans to become more involved in improving the education system and getting involved in local politics.

The “Voice of Promise Award,” which honors a current student of the program, will be given to Elizabeth Jacobs, a 6^th grade student. She will receive the award because of her example and involvement in the program.

Ralph Hawkins, chairman of the board of HKS, Inc., and 2015 chair of the Dallas Regional Chamber, has been named the recipient of the 13th Annual Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, presented by Bank of Texas and Texas Woman’s University and the Texas Woman’s University Foundation. The announcement was made at the Dallas Arboretum on September 23. Texas Woman’s University’s new Chancellor and President Dr. Carine M. Feyten will present the award at the Virginia Chandler Dykes luncheon event on Feb. 19, 2015, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Belo Mansion and Pavilion.
