The Limelight: Odyssey Healthcare

Odyssey Healthcare is one of the largest hospice providers in the country. This hospice service provides care for patients with all types of illnesses. Under Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance programs, Odyssey will provide medical supplies and equipment associated with the terminal illness, such as bandages, catheters, oxygen, hospital bed, wheelchair and walkers, at no cost to the patient. Odyssey will also provide medications associated with the terminal illness to help relieve symptoms at no cost to the patient.

Odyssey provides patients with specialized hospice “comfort care” and offers compassionate care for people coping with a life-limiting illness. Odyssey goes the extra mile to enable patients to live their lives fully while sharing what precious time remains with their loved ones and friends. When a patient has a life expectancy of six months or less, Odyssey’s comfort care providers help to treat the symptoms caused by the disease when the disease cannot be cured.

Although providing comfort care can require much time, commitment and specialized training, there are several ways you can help out. Volunteer Services will send out an email request for food donations to patients under hospice care that can no longer afford the basic necessities. Spa Days are hosted for residents at assisted living communities throughout Dallas. Volunteers are encouraged to enjoy a day of spa-like pampering for much-deserving residents and patients. Other seasonal events require volunteers when providing these socially unique experiences for those affected by life-limiting illnesses.

If you’d like to volunteer for these events or to fulfill food donation requests, please see contact information listed below for Volunteer Services Manager, Lorrie Anderson with Odyssey Hospice.

Kids of Dallas: Night of Superstars

Superstar (Soo’-per-star’) or (Soo’-puh-stah’) n.: 1. One who is idolized by fans and elevated to a position of importance 2. One who has great popular appeal.

Generally, at some point in kids’ lives, they dream of becoming a Superstar - an actor, athlete, singer, dancer, model, etc. Unfortunately, because of the importance society places on physical appearance, many kids feel they could never experience a life of stardom, due to incurable diseases, birth defects, or accidents which have left them disfigured. The understanding of being different is ever present, and even the simplest challenges that await these children on a day-to-day basis often make our worst days seem sadly insignificant. Yet through their unimaginable strength and courage, these children continue to overcome immense adversity. Unknowingly, these kids make a major impact on the lives of those around them, oftentimes serving as the source of inspiration for many of our own greatest accomplishments. Undoubtedly, the time is long overdue to celebrate these kids for their many contributions to our lives and help them realize what Superstars they truly are!

We invite you to join us on this star-studded evening to make their SUPERSTAR status official!

Dallas Children's Theatre Cabaret Gala

CABARET GALA benefiting the Dallas Children's Theatre

Saturday, October 2
8:30pm - 11:30pm
In the Venetian Room at the Farimont Hotel - Dallas

Be entertained in grand style with a true Broadway cabaret lineup featuring veteran performers. The Venetian Room of the Fairmont has an all-star lineup from the honorary chair to the featured entertainer. On stage will be Jason Graae with Alex Rybeck. If Jason’s name doesn’t immediately wake up a couple of brain cells, not to worry. It just shows that you’re not all that familiar with the glitzy world of music on both coasts. He’s done everything from one-man shows, Broadway to “Friends.”

Ruth Buzzi is Honorary Chair of this event. Money raised will benefit the Dallas Children's Theatre, which makes entertainment and culture available to young minds who need it most during their formative years. Be a part of this important cause, and have a night out on the town you won't soon forget.

Yvonne Crum and Ruth Buzzi are no strangers to gala events...come and join the fun.

For tickets call (214) 978-0110.

The Limelight: Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

Only 90 minutes from Dallas, you can easily escape the everyday and explore the rugged beauty of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Amidst the live oak, limestone and juniper, nestled away in the rustic hills of Somervell County you will discover a sanctuary for endangered species. Their goal is promoting the preservation and procreation of threatened/endangered species, environmental awareness and a recreational and educational experience for people of all ages.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is dedicated to the conservation of species in peril, conducting scientific research, training of professionals, responsible management of natural resources, and public education.

The drive-through animal safari allows you to experience the animals in their habitat and surroundings. Food is available for purchase at the Front Gate to feed the animals from your car window during the drive. At the half-way point on top of the hill, stop for a snack at the Cafe and sit at the Overlook to enjoy a great view of the entire preserve.

Fossil Rim wants you to explore and discover endangered species via their Scenic Drive, Guided Tours, staying in one of their Bunkhouses, Safari Tents or The Lodge, enjoying the animals at the Children's Animal Center and the Glen Rose/Somervell County area.

Get Involved, Make A Difference
The animals depend on each of you - visitors, members, donors, volunteers and corporate sponsors - for the continuation of conservation efforts. Fossil Rim has undertaken the monumental task of saving species by using their vast acreage as a breeding facility. In giving these animals a more natural environment, they are paving the way to maximize their potential to propagate their species as would occur in the wild. Each time you purchase a ticket, buy a souvenir, enjoy a meal, take a tour, learn something by attending a program or spend the night on property you are supporting endangered species and Fossil Rim's mission.

There are many ways to donate to Fossil Rim! Money is the obvious one, but consider donations in kind, become a volunteer or a sponsor. One of the easiest donations is a marketing donation... tell a friend!

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 entity specializing in captive breeding programs for indigenous and exotic endangered and threatened species of animals.
