LLS Saint Valentine's Day Luncheon - reception

More than 80 friends and supporters in cocktail attire attended a beautiful reception at the Crosland’s Highland Park home on October 12 to kick off the upcoming 2011 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Saint Valentine’s Day Luncheon & Fashion Show by Stanley Korshak.

The festivities spilled out onto the poolside patio and fire pit area, where the Rangers’ playoff game was playing on television. Wendy Krispin generously donated the wonderful and hearty hors d’oeuvres. Kate Rose Marquez and Holly Davis announced that Margot Perot, who was out of the country and regretfully could not attend, has agreed to be the luncheon’s Honorary Chair.

The theme is “The Art of Romance.” “We’re going for the edgy side of romance – think very Johnny Depp,” said Kate Rose. Young Justin Thompson, a 6th grader from Trinity Christian Academy was chosen personally by Alicia Landry from many nominees to be the Spirit of Tom Landry Award Winner for his courageous battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia and for his strong spirit and many volunteer hours on behalf of the disease. Nancy C. Rogers, who was in attendance, will be the recipient of the Lynda Adleta Heart of Gold Award for her many years of overwhelming support of the cause. Gold Crown Valet Parking graciously donated the valet parking, and Glazer’s donated all the beverages.

NEWS: TREC's Study Helps City of Dallas Secure $2.225M HUD Grant

Dallas, Texas (October 21, 2010) – U.S. Housing and Urban Development Regional Administrator C. Donald Babers and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced a $2.225 million HUD grant to the City of Dallas at City Hall’s Council Chambers yesterday. The grant request was based on a study that The Real Estate Council funded on Transit Oriented Developments (TODs). The grant will support local efforts to achieve sustainable communities that link housing, transportation and services.

TREC funded $175,000 of the TOD study, Bank of America funded $100,000, and the Craig and Kathryn Hall Foundation funded $25,000

Mayor Tom Leppert introduced Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who said, “Thanks to The Real Estate Council, DART, the Dallas Police Department, the Dallas Urban League and the City of Dallas, we have so many important partners working together to create a livable community. Thanks to Housing and Urban Development for helping make it happen.”

The Limelight: Cooper CARES

Cooper CARES (Christian Alliance for Rehabilitation and Employment Services) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide vocational services and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities and disadvantaged adults. Cooper CARES is a unique community outreach opportunity. They stand apart from other social services but will tirelessly work to sustain employment for those un-employable.

Cooper CARES will seek to empower the disabled and disadvantaged through employment, job placement, career development, mentorships, education, addiction recovery, and building a community that fosters dignity, self-worth, and hope for the future.

Cooper CARES hopes to open a work center in Cooper, Texas for the residents of Delta, Hopkins, Lamar, Fannin, and Hunt Counties. Once in full operation, the effort will generate revenues through providing services to the state (MHMR and DARS), and through negotiating contracts with existing businesses to provide services for packaging, sorting, re-work, assembly, mailings, etc. Cooper CARES will also work toward local agricultural production as well as manufacturing.

Cooper CARES is diligently working to accomplish the following goals in order to help the many who have been overlooked in the job market.

Needs and Opportunities:
• Must raise approximately $500,000 – ($200,000 for start-up, $300,000 for manufacturing)
• Needs community members and leaders willing to serve on Board of Directors
• Needs volunteers to serve as mentors and coaches with clients
• Needs churches who are willing to be mission partners

Eagle Scout Builds Trail at the Arts Park

Each year, young men strive to earn the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. The Arts Park of the Arts of Collin County was chosen by Cory Williams, a sophomore at Allen High School to be the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project. Cory engaged his two older brothers, who are also both Eagle Scouts, along with other volunteers and designed a trail from Exhange Parkway folllowing the of the creek which is yet to be named at the Arts of Collin County. Recently another Eagle Scout hand crafted six benches to be placed along the trail in the Arts Park. Combining these two gifts will create a memorable legacy for these young men.

It is wonderful to hear of such industious and creative young men contributing to our community and supporting the arts in this way.
