DSO and The Concert Truck Schedule

From mid-November through mid-December, the DSO and The Concert Truck will present collaborative community concerts across the city, featuring musicians of the DSO and other arts organizations. Concerts will be held outdoors with audiences and performers able to maintain a safe distance while enjoying live performances.

The Concert Truck, founded in 2016 by concert pianists Susan Zhang and Nick Luby, is a mobile concert stage that brings classical chamber music directly to communities. The Concert Truck travels all over the United States performing alone and with other musicians to a variety of venues and audiences. While in Dallas, Susan and Nick will perform repertoire of their own and will collaborate with DSO Musicians. For more information, visit mydso.com.

Soup's On Luncheon A 'Souper' Success

The fifth annual Stewpot Alliance Soup’s On! Luncheon and Art Sale was held Tuesday, January 29 at the Omni Dallas. Co-chaired by Kay Lunceford and Trish Weigand under the encouragement and guidance of honorary chairs, Joan and Elvis Mason, the annual luncheon which raises money for the services and programs offered by The Stewpot and soon-to-open 508 Park had a record attendance and moved total donations from the five-year history to over $1.2 million.

Performances by the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Varsity Choir and Ensemble and Dallas Wind Symphony greeted guests who mixed and mingled between original pieces of art by artists of The Stewpot Open Art Program and dining packages donated by participating chefs. Dallas Morning News columnist and Stewpot supporter Steve Blow emceed the event while New York Times best-selling author Wes Moore offered an autobiographical keynote lecture inspired by the ‘other’ Wes Moore who remains in prison for the murder of an off-duty Baltimore police officer and is the subject of Moore’s The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.

Luncheon guests received handcrafted pewter coins as a token of appreciation from renowned sculptor Brad Oldham in collaboration with the Stewpot artists. Each coin was handcrafted by Oldham and the Stewpot artists and features West Wind, an architectural detail found on the 508 Park building.

The 508 Park Project has acquired the historic building located across the street from The Stewpot and is transforming it into a multi-use facility to include a music academy, recording studio, concert amphitheater, rooftop terrace, community garden, and the Museum of Street Culture. In addition, The Stewpot's successful Open Art Program will be located there and a gallery for the homeless artists will be opened. The Project seeks to bring together people of all cultures and faiths through dialogue, education, music, and art.

The Fifth Annual Soup's On Luncheon

The fifth annual SOUP’S ON! Stewpot Alliance Luncheon and Art Sale will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Omni Dallas featuring more than a dozen of the city’s finest chefs serving up signature soups to benefit The Stewpot and 508 Park.

SOUP’S ON! includes an art sale of more than fifty original paintings and handmade jewelry from the artists of the Stewpot Open Art Programs, keynote speaker Wes Moore, emcee and Dallas Morning News columnist Steve Blow and a performances by The Dallas Wind Symphony and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Visual Arts Varsity Choir.

The Stewpot offers a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals of Dallas, providing resources for basic survival needs as well as opportunities to start a new life.  The Stewpot offers case management services and job training; street outreach for drug/alcohol addiction; accessible dental and medical care, mental health services, and legal aid to the homeless and at-risk; and sequential programs for children and youth that help break the cycle of poverty for future generations.

"A Home for the Holidays" Luncheon

More than 150 hundred guests attended the annual Friends of Wednesday's Child Luncheon on December 2nd at The Ritz-Carlton Dallas. Students from Booker T. Washington performed, and Emcee Gloria Campos was presented with a suprise award for her many years of service on behalf of Wednesday's Child.

Guest speaker was former Mrs. Texas, Southlake resident Tracy Elliott, who knows pain and fear first hand. Tracy chronicles her upbringing in her book, "Unbroken." Tracy is now the mother of two, and her husband Bryan is a successful businessman. Says Tracy, "The devil cannot make you ashamed of things you give God the glory for bringing you through. Friends of Wednesday’s Child (formerly Wednesday’s Child Benefit Corporation) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1984 when volunteers recognized there is no child needier than a foster child. Today, they are the only non-profit organization whose single purpose is to meet the unique needs of North Texas foster children.

Booker T Washington's FLYINGHORSE Performing Arts Fest

FLYINGHORSE 2011 Performing Arts Festival, presented by the Booker T. Washington High School Advisory Board, will rock the Dallas Arts District on Friday, March 25. Guests will explore the school and discover its creative revolutionaries, while enjoying a musical celebration that will rival any artistic event this season.
“There’s no other place like Booker T. Washington High School when it comes to nurturing gifts. Not only did some of my fondest musical memories take place there, but the school provided me with the best opportunity a young student in the arts world could ask for,” said Booker T. Washington alumna Erykah Badu. “At the time, I did not realize the magnitude of the experience and education I was receiving, so it is my honor to give my support back to the place that created the avenue for me to reach my goals.”

The special night will begin at 6 p.m. with BookLook, an entertaining tour of the school’s campus, along with student performances throughout, which will give patrons an inside look into the students’ work. GRAMMY® award-winning alumna Erykah Badu will join forces with some of Booker T.’s talented and gifted students in the Montgomery Arts Theatre at 7 p.m. for an unparalleled, first-ever performance in the theater. Guests will then venture Second-Line-style across the street from Booker T. Washington to One Arts Plaza for an exciting evening of entertainment and dancing with performances by The NOLA Hot Damn! Second-Line, Stage Revue and Dance starring the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Charmaine Neville, Kermit Ruffins and The Barbeque Swingers, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington and The Roadmasters.

An Afternoon with Peter Duchin

Before his performance at the annual Junior League of Dallas Ball presented by SEWELL on Saturday evening, legendary Peter Duchin will be on campus at Booker T. High School for the Performing and Visual Arts on Friday, February 25 for "An Afternoon with Peter Duchin." Mr. Duchin will attend a meet and greet at 2:30 pm in the Library followed by a student forum and performance in the Montgomery Arts Theater.

Dallas Art Fair 2011

It is almost that time of the year again for the Dallas Art Fair. Mark your calendar and head down to the Fashion Industry Gallery to view art by over 50 prominent national and international dealers and galleries.
