Helping Our Heroes Connects Civilians To Veterans

From the airstrikes against ISIS to the controversy over President Obama’s salute coming off of Marine One, you can't turn on the news these days without seeing stories about our military presence around the world. When we think of our soldiers, you most likely picture them in combat or protecting our allies abroad. The majority of citizens tend to forget about soldiers when they come home. They back it back safely, everything should be fine. But for many the transition back to civilian life can be equally as traumatic as events that may have happened to them while they served especially if they've lost a limb or had serious injuries. Helping Our Heroes Foundation is a Dallas-based charity that works to help those that serve who now need our help to resume a "normal" life.

On Sunday, September 14 over 200 guests attended the Helping Our Heroes Dinner and Auction at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. Attendees enjoyed a delicious dinner from Eddie Deen's, a silent and live auction, and words of encouragement and wisdom from 2014 Guest of Honor, General Terry Drake, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and speaker, Semper Fi member Brandon Pelletier. Pelletier was injured during a night operation in the Al Anbar Province in 2007. His right arm was crushed at the elbow. After several years of evaluations and multiple surgeries, Brandon still has no feeling and is unable to move his arm. These trials have not kept Brandon down and he enthralled and inspired guests with his moving speech about his journey back to a “normal life”. The next day, 300 golfers played a tournament at Brookhaven Country Club and helped raise additional funds through hole-in-one contests, a cigar bar, furthest from the tee contest, etc. While the final tally is still being calculated, event organizers feel confident that this year’s contribution will come in around $100,000.

Funds raised from this event will go to the Semper Fi Fund which helps Marines, sailors, and their families meet their financial needs during difficult times. The Fund works closely with the Marine Corps, the Navy, and the hospitals nationwide to identify and assess the needs of specific families. You can't turn on the news these days without seeing stories about our military presence overseas. But what happens to these soldiers when they come home? Honoring Kidd Kraddick: A guest post by Cynthia Smoot

Last Saturday, the world lost one of it's brightest lights when David "Kidd" Kraddick died in New Orleans, LA at a charity golf tournament. I was a Junior in high school when Kidd hit the Dallas airwaves in 1984 at KEGL (The Eagle). And almost every morning over these last 29 years, I started my day with Kidd. I laughed at his cantankerous relationship with co-host Kellie Rasberry. I rolled my eyes along with him at Big Al Mack's stories recounting his dating exploits. I eavesdropped on occasion when he would call his daughter, Caroline, to see how her school play auditions went or ask about a math test she was going to have that day. When a friend texted me news of his passing on Saturday, I cried like a baby. Even though we never met, I felt like I had lost a dear friend.

Thousands of people have taken to social media to express their loss. Among them was Bread Winners VP of Operations, Kendra Shier, who was an intern for Kraddick 20 years ago.  It was a just few weeks ago that Shire ran into Kraddick backstage at Two Door Cinema Club and the two exchanged hugs. When someone is taken from your life so suddenly, it can be difficult to process and there are always feelings of regret and things unsaid. What I want Kidd to know, is that he mattered. To hundreds of chronically ill children and their families, he mattered. To those of us who were just cranky in the mornings about going to work, he mattered. Every day he brought joy to our lives and a smile to our hearts.

When a tragedy strikes, people tend to think "what can I do to help?". Bread Winners Cafe & Bakery is providing the Dallas community with a simple way to show Kidd that he mattered.  Join Bread Winners on August 6, 2013 from 5pm – close for a fundraiser for Kidd's Kids. All four Bread Winners locations will be donating 15% of sales from the evening to Kidd's Kids in memory of Kidd Kraddick.  At Kidd’s Kids, their primary goal is to provide chronically ill and/or physically challenged children (ages 5 to 12) with an unforgettable adventure! Throughout the year, they work hard to raise the funds necessary to send approximately 50 children and their families (including siblings between the ages of 5 and 16) on an all-expenses paid, fun-filled, vacation to Walt Disney World® in Florida. I look forward to honoring David "Kidd" Kraddick's memory by participating in this fundraiser so that Kidd's legacy will continue to live on!  For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/179654135548874/
