Jean Paul Gaultier at the Dallas Museum of Art

Jean Paul Gaultier couture collection

Next fall, the Dallas Museum of Art will present the exhibit The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. This is the premiere retrospective devoted to the French couturier and it will make its first U.S. appearance right here in Dallas. It is also the first time that the DMA is to present an exhibit exclusively dedicated to exploring the art of fashion.

The Gaultier collection will include pieces and studies from his very first runway shows in the 1970s and chronicle his progress to becoming one of the most important and revered fashion designers in the world. Featuring many pieces not previously exhibited, this presentation will focus on five different themes: "Jean Paul Gaultier's Paris," "Fusions," "Multi-Gender," "Eutrotrash/ X-Rated," and "Metropolis" with around 120 pieces from the Gaultier couture collection, ready-to-wear, and accessories. The exhibit is organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison of Jean Paul Gaultier and will be visiting Dallas from November 13, 2011-February 12, 2012.

"Jean Paul Gaultier's couture fashions are bold and unapologetic, and intuitively reflect the cultural moods of a global society. His designs inspire, influence, and bring the very essence of imagination to life," said Bonnie Pitman, The Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art. "We are thrilled to be the first U.S. institution to exhibit the first retrospective on the work of one of the most influential designers of our time."
