Tagalongs, Samoas, and Trefoils -- oh my!

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (GSNETX) launched its annual Cookie Program on January 10, 2014. New this year, Girl Scouts will have cookies in hand, allowing them to sell, deliver and collect money in one easy step; to the delight of cookie fans across northeast Texas. Each box of cookies sells for $4. The GSNETX Cookie Program will run through Feb. 17.

Also new this year -- Cookie Locator app!

To find a booth near you, download the Cookie Locator app for iPhone or Android by searching GS COOKIES in the app store. You can then search for cookie sales by zip code and share with friends on social media. So easy!

Not sure which flavor to buy? The app can help with that too! Fill out the fun "What's your cookie personality?" quiz to reveal the cookie that best fits YOU. Cookie flavors include the world-famous Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, Dulce de Leche, Thank U Berry Munch, and Savannah Smiles.

In 2013, GSNETX sold 3.6 million boxes of cookies. The GSNETX Cookie Program supports local Girl Scouts and 100 percent of proceeds raised stay in northeast Texas.

Selling cookies is more than a tradition; the Girl Scout Cookie Program is an integral part of Girl Scouts’ business and economic literacy initiative for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade. The program helps Girl Scouts develop five key skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Girl Scouts also have the opportunity to earn the new Mary Kay Entrepreneurship patch, designed to inspire the next generation of female leaders through the Cookie Program.

All girls who participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program are eligible to earn the annual Cookie Activity Pin (shown below). When they earn the pin, invite girls to share their accomplishments in each of the 5 Skills. Here’s how girls achieve the 5 Skills through the Girl Scout Cookie Program: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.

12th Annual Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award

Mary Brinegar, president and CEO of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Society, Inc., has been named the recipient of the 12th Annual Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, presented by Bank of Texas and Texas Woman’s University and the Texas Woman’s University Foundation. The announcement was made at a private reception in the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Hunt on September 25.

Texas Woman’s University Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart will present the award at the Virginia Chandler Dykes luncheon event Feb. 20, 2014, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Belo Mansion and Pavilion, 2101 Ross Ave.

Dallas Arboretum $5 Admission in January

It's not too late to take advantage of the January special at the Dallas Arboretum. Now through January 31, the Dallas Arboretum invites you to enjoy the facility and gardens for only $5 admission.

“The Dallas Arboretum is one of the top 10 botanical gardens in the world, according to the Travel Channel, and it’s pretty nearly all year long,” said Brian Shivers, Dallas Arboretum board chairman. “With this discount for entrance, we want to encourage people to see the pansies, ornamental kale and winter plantings, to walk the one mile fitness trail throughout the garden, and to get a sneak peek as we get ready for the 30th anniversary of Dallas Blooms.”

2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the Dallas Arboretum’s major floral festival Dallas Blooms with the theme “Birds in Paradise.” Bank of America is the presenting sponsor of Dallas Blooms, with Park Place Dealerships and Celebrity Cruises as supporting sponsors. Dallas Blooms begins on February 22, 2014, and runs through April 6, 2014. The garden explodes with color as more than 500,000 spring-blossoming bulbs burst, and the beloved peacock topiaries return to spread their colorful petal tails in the Jonsson Color Garden.

As part of Dallas Blooms, the Dallas Arboretum also launches its Bird House Exhibit, life-size playhouses designed by local architects to complement this year’s theme, Birds in Paradise. This creative exhibit is located in the Lakeside Exhibit Area. Children can play in these bird houses, while learning about bird predators, bird adaptations, how they find prey, how they camouflage themselves and survive, how they migrate, how they create nests, lay eggs and more.
