National Philanthropy Day Celebrates 30 Years with Luncheon

The Greater Dallas Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals will host the 30^th luncheon celebrating Dallas’ National Philanthropy Day – bringing together area nonprofits, volunteers, funders, foundations, business and community members to honor many of this city’s finest who give selflessly in support of numerous worthy causes – on Friday, November 13, 2015, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Hyatt Regency Dallas, Landmark Ballroom.  On this special anniversary year, Dallas Philanthropist Nancy Dedman, serving as the event’s first honorary chair, will join AFP and presenting sponsor KERA to honor award recipients in seven categories.

 

“We are thrilled to have Nancy Dedman as our honorary chair for the 30^th anniversary,” said Sarah Elliott, luncheon chair. “As we think back over the last 30 years, Nancy Dedman, a past recipient of the Outstanding Philanthropist Award, possesses all of the qualities we look for in our award recipients each year.  She is a true philanthropist who extends her generosity to a host of worthwhile causes, including education, health care, and the arts.”

The Greater Dallas Chapter of AFP was among the first to begin celebrating National Philanthropy Day in 1981.  Today, over 500 attend the luncheon which includes AFP members and community leaders.  National Philanthropy Day celebrates the great contributions philanthropy, and those who work in the philanthropic process, make to our community. AFP Chapters involve more than 28,000 individuals in celebrating philanthropy each year.

Many of WAC's traditionally unpaid interns have gone on to careers in the public and private sectors and use their Council experience to deal with international and national projects.

 

The Council seeks sharp college or high school–level talented, passionate, energetic individuals to help accomplish their daily missions. The intern program may even translate into college credit – consult your academic advisor.

Sixth Annual Women that Soar Awards

 

The Sixth Annual Women that Soar Awards will honor beloved local designer Paulette Martsolf with the Entrepreneur Award on November 9th, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Reunion Blvd.

The Women That Soar Awards debuted in 2007 to honor extraordinary women in entertainment, sports, business, fashion, arts, philanthropy, media and civic health as well as Lifetime Achievement and Legacy awards.

The November 9th program will be broadcast on December 15th and another date TBD. In addition to Paulette, the 2013 Women That Soar Awards honorees include: Her Royal Highness, Princess Reema Bandar; Former FirstLady of Mexico, Marta Fox; Former President WNBA, Donna Orender; Entreperneur and Stylist, Aly Scott; Philanthropist, Anne Davidson; CEO of Ewomen Network, Sandra Yancy; activist, Cheryl (Action) Jackson; Executive Producer, A&R Executive, Teresa Lababera-Whites; Group Publisher, DMagazine, Kimberly Elenez; Attorney, Dawn Neufeld; and Legacy Award Recipient Nell St. Cyr, first female president of the Houston Petroleum Club.

Paulette will receive the Entrepreneur Award recognition just two months following the twenty year anniversary of her popular Snider Plaza boutique - Alllie Coosh. Allie-Coosh is the longest running ladies boutique in the popular shopping destination. 

Making her first mark on the design world with a line of pajamas at age 28, this Newfoundland native branded her designs 'allie-coosh' which translates to 'off to bed' in her Canadian province. Although the chic line of sleepwear awoke a strong initial audience, she evolved her collection to everyday and special occasion wear in the first three years of business in Snider Plaza.

Paulette’s clothing collection stems from a variety of novelty textiles such as cashmere, cotton, linen and organza yet has an exceptionally high demand for her signature custom dyed fabric. This fabric, imported from Japan, is well received by her sophisticated audience who enjoys jet setting and socializing in style and comfort.  

A prestigious crowd of Park Cities women beckon Paulette for custom made designs such as wedding, charity gala and daytime attire. Over the years she has had several boutique expansions and the launch of her own jewelry line. This handmade jewelry collection incorporates inspiration from the rugged coastline of Newfoundland known to the natives as ‘The Rock’.  This appreciation for natural elements blended with her husband’s influence as a paleontologist results in necklaces, bracelets and earrings constructed of dinosaur bones, mammoth tusk, antique ivory, raw amber, black jade, pyrite, raw crystal, Ethiopian silver, Mali prayer beads, coral, wood, leather, feathers and other elements of the earth.

“Saving the Future: Global Efforts to Reduce Child Mortality”

In March, the GAVI Alliance signed a deal with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the governments of five countries - Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and Norway - and pharmaceutical companies to supply low-cost pneumonia vaccines for babies in Africa. The vaccines are expected to save nearly 900,000 lives by 2015.

Join the World Affairs Council to hear Alex Palacios, Special Representative of the Executive Office of the GAVI Alliance, as part of the 2010 Global Connections Series. The series seeks to connect North Texans to humanitarian issues and efforts around the world, by raising awareness of these critical topics and expanding the consciousness of citizens in the D/FW region, encouraging them to respond to humanitarian issues that affect the lives of millions around the world. The Council will bring a diverse group of speakers to discuss issues ranging from children’s and women’s rights to world hunger and corporate social responsibility. Each event will offer opportunities for attendees to engage in advocacy and outreach.

The Limelight: Les Femmes Du Monde

Today, the Limelight is certainly on Les Femmes du Monde. Les Femmes du Monde is a non-profit in Dallas that first came to be on June 14th in 1961. The organization was founded by 20 Dallas women who were and are incredibly involved and concerned with many facets of worldly issues which both directly and indirectly affect our country and community. Today, Les Femmes du Monde continues to bring brilliant and lively women in the community together. The organizations beneficiaries are the World Affairs Council of Dallas-Fort Worth and the Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

The organization hosts a mélange of events, meetings, and functions throughout the year which help to raise money towards these dedicated causes while allowing members and attendees to discuss the very conflicts and problems that initially brought them together.
