Liberty Street Garden Groundbreaking & Volunteer Opportunities

 

On June 29^th, The Meadows Foundation, NFNL, and Bonton Farms joined together to break ground on Liberty Street Garden (LSG), a unique social enterprise project. LSG will hire members enrolled in NFNL’s Women’s Program, providing work experience and a source of income to help survivors of trafficking and exploitation build their resumes as they rebuild their lives.

The Meadows Foundation developed the concept and provided seed funding through a grant to cover all start-up and operating costs for the first year. Bonton Farms is providing their expertise to guide the cultivation and development of the garden. NFNL is operating the project, providing the employees and volunteers to run and sustain the enterprise.

LSG will grow organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale to farmers markets, local restaurants, and the community on a one-acre plot of land centered in the Wilson Historic District near downtown Dallas.

Nexus Matching Funds Campaign -- $100,000 Goal

Nexus Recovery Center is seeking new community support to raise $100,000 to leverage two recent gifts from local foundations.  The Meadows Foundation granted $200,000 to Nexus for programs and services, and of that funding – $50,000 must come from new donors.  In addition, Hoblitzelle Foundation granted Nexus with $50,000 for their capital campaign to provide new bathrooms and services in the main Building A, that houses admissions, reception and counseling rooms for clients. However a match challenge has been issued – and it must come from a new funder source – the donor could double their investment in Nexus and the community.

In an open letter, Nexus explains their needs are real and they have served 11% more women and children this year that last year, providing vital and life saving proven services to some 2,263 clients and their children who are in our programs.

In addition, long-time supporters Linda and Steve Ivy (President of Heritage Auction) have given $100,000 to Nexus to provide vital services on the La Prada campus. The Ivy's have been involved with Nexus for years through the Women's Auxiliary. Linda serves on the Nexus Board, and they both served as Chairs of the 2013 Annual Appeal.

Nexus is pleased to report new partnerships with Executives in Action, The Real Estate Council, Goldman Sachs, The Celanese Foundation, and Regions Bank.
