SMU Meadows Museum brings hands-on art summer camps for grades 4-8

Calling all budding young artists! The Meadows Museum, SMU, will kick off summer with two fun-filled camps for rising 4th–8th graders. Campers can create their own artwork, explore the museum’s galleries and even go behind the scenes to view works rarely on display.

SUMMER CAMP: SENSATIONAL SCULPTURES

June 1-5 from 9 a.m.-noon

Rising 6th-8th graders

Chisel, carve, model and mold! Students are invited to the Meadows’ Education Studio to explore different materials used to create three-dimensional works of art, including clay, plaster, wire and wood.

SUMMER CAMP: PRINTMAKING PALOOZA

June 22-26 from 9 a.m.-noon

Rising 4th-6th graders

It’s a printmaking palooza! Students are invited to the Meadows’ Education Studio to make artworks of their very own as they’re introduced to a variety of techniques, such as monoprinting, screen printing, gelatin printing and linocut.

Cost is $200 per child, $175 for children of SMU faculty, staff and students, and $125 for children of Meadows Museum members at the Individual level and above.

Meadows Museum celebrates 60th birthday with Family Day Bash on Sunday

Sixty years ago, on April 3, 1965, SMU opened the doors to the Meadows Museum as part of its School of the Arts. Now, in a freestanding building six times the size of its original space and with a collection approximately doubled in size, the Meadows Museum is the premier U.S. institution dedicated to the study and presentation of Spanish art and culture.

The museum will be celebrating its milestone birthday all year long with an exciting slate of programs and exhibitions. The centerpiece of the celebrations will be a weekend of anniversary-themed programs held April 3–6. 

Here is a list of the upcoming activities planned for the 60th birthday celebration:

60TH BIRTHDAY FREE ADMISSION WEEKEND

Saturday, April 5, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, April 6, 1–5 p.m.

Visitors are invited to enjoy free admission and explore the Meadows Museum’s stunning permanent collection along with the monumental traveling exhibition The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce, featuring Flaming June and other masterworks by European, American, and Puerto Rican artists. Also on view is A Decade of Acquisitions: Celebrating Works on Paper, a special exhibition of Spanish drawings, prints and watercolors from the 17th to the 21st century recently acquired by the museum.

THE MEADOWS MUSEUM’S “ERAS” TOUR

Saturday, April 5, 2–3 p.m.

This Saturday, the museum’s standing public tour will have a special 60th-anniversary focus, exploring key works acquired during each of the museum’s past six decades.

FAMILY DAY | 60TH BIRTHDAY BASH!

Sunday, April 6, 2–4 p.m.

Enjoy art-making activities, games, interactive gallery experiences and, of course, birthday cake! Strollers are welcome, and free parking is available in the museum’s underground lot. In honor of its milestone birthday, the museum is giving back—attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the DFW Birthday Brigade, which serves up birthday magic for unsheltered youth in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Champions for Literacy - Football Camp with SMU QB Preston Stone & Teammates

 

Champions for Literacy, a leading non-profit leveraging the power of sports to impact childhood literacy, announced today it is teaming up with SMU quarterback and Dallas-native Preston Stone to host two free football camps for Dallas youth on July 9 and 10 at the Cedar Crest Community Center in South Oak Cliff. In partnership with local non-profits Behind Every Door and Mercy Street, the United For Dallas camps will create unique leadership opportunities for middle and high school athletes from across Dallas to inspire reading in their communities.

"I am excited to bring together young athletes of all different backgrounds from across Dallas and share my passion for both football and literacy to help equip and inspire these students," said Preston Stone, a 2020 Texas High School State Champion and current SMU quarterback. 

The July 9 camp will feature a small group of Behind Every Door and Mercy Street program participants and public registration for the camp on Wednesday, July 10 is open to boys and girls ages 11-18. The camp will run from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the newly renovated Behind Every Door Cedar Crest Community Center.

2016 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award Recipient Announced

Methodist Health System Foundation has named R. Gerald Turner, president of Southern Methodist University, philanthropist, and education and community leader, as the 2016 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award recipient.

The award will be presented at a dinner on Wednesday, October 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Established in 2005, the award recognizes individuals whose demonstrated commitment and excellence in community leadership emulate the achievements of former Dallas Mayor Robert S. Folsom.

“We are very pleased to honor Dr. Turner with this prominent award. As the leader of my alma mater and a longtime Methodist supporter and board member, there is no one who understands the Methodist mission and values better than Dr. Turner ,” said April Box, Methodist Health System Foundation President and CEO.

Operation Kindness Presents Artists for Animals - a Concert Fusion Experience

Join Operation Kindness for a special evening filled with music, photography and art. Guests are invited to sip wine and savor tasty treats while listening to musical performances by members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Southern Methodist University Oboe Studio — paired with an animal photography show by Teresa Berg. Simmons' Gift to SMU Will Fund New Building

SMU announced yesterday that Harold C. and Annette Caldwell Simmons have committed a gift of $25 million to the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development. Their donation will fund a new building for the expanding programs of the school and support three new endowed academic positions. The new facility will be named Harold Clark Simmons Hall, in honor of Mr. Simmons, at Mrs. Simmons’ request.

Thursday's gift announcement was celebrated with the ringing of school bells. (l. to r.) David Chard, dean of the Simmons School; Annette Caldwell Simmons and Harold C. Simmons; Caren Prothro, chair of the SMU Board of Trustees; and R. Gerald Turner, president of SMU.

Just in time for football season, approximately 800 people gathered in the Khmer Pavilion of the Hilton Anatole last week for a rather intimate and personal meeting with SuperBowl Champ Troy Aikman. Troy Aikman and Brad Sham

Brad Sham - "The Voice of the Dallas Cowboys" - interviewed Aikman on stage while sports buffs, SMU alum, Cowboys fans, and even former teammates, listened in on the conversation. Aikman shared his thoughts on the recent Big 12 and SEC shufflings in the college world, and he also gave us insight into the NFL world. He joked about working alongside a gorilla in his television commercials for endorsement deals, and he proudly spoke of working under his mentor, Roger Staubach. Aikman said, "I can only hope that I can be to Tony Romo or another future quarterback what Roger has been to me."

4th Annual Blondes vs Brunettes Dallas

On Saturday, August 6th, over 150 of Dallas’ most beautiful and talented young-professionals will take the field at SMU’s Westcott Field in the 4th Annual Blondes vs. Brunettes Powder-Puff Football Game presented by Bud Light. The annual game, which raises money to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s, kicks off with a pre-game show at 7:00pm.

Blondes vs. Brunettes Dallas is a powder-puff football game hosted for a day of fun, fellowship, philanthropy and enjoyment as a way of raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Dallas. BvB is a personal way for young professionals across the country to raise awareness and donations to help eradicate this grave disease.

4th Annual Blondes vs Brunettes

I am proudly participating in the 4th Annual Blondes vs Brunettes Football Game , a “powder puff” game benefiting The Alzheimer's Association. Founded by sisters whose father was afflicted by Alzheimer's, BvB is a personal way for young professionals to raise awareness, funds and support to fight this disease. I am personally playing in honor of my grandfather, the late Dr. C. J. Capps Jr, who was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s just before a fatal stroke. Do you have a personal connection to this terrible disease?

75,000 people in North Texas suffer from Alzheimer's disease. BvB Dallas has been the most successful city by raising over $415,000 in just 3 years! Our overall goal this year is $215,000. My personal goal is $850, but I can't reach it without your generous support.

Ruth Altshuler and the J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award Luncheon

I just got back to the office from one of the most inspiring luncheons I have ever attended.  The 2011 J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award was presented to Ruth Altshuler in the beautiful Martha Proctor Mack Grand Ballroom in the Umphrey Lee Center at SMU.

Just being in this beautiful room was a treat to itself.  Mrs. Altshuler told me earlier this week that the room was so ugly until Interior Designer Extraordinaire Emily Summers donated her time and services.  The room is so chic now!  The walls are finished in gorgeous gray Venetian Plaster and the white columns and mouldings are so fresh and cheerful.

But being in the room in such great company was truly special!  The luncheon, chaired by the stylish Nancy Strauss Halbreich, was attended by an outstanding group of Mrs. Altshuler's friends including the charming former First Lady Laura Bush and the accomplished Nancy Brinker.

Mrs. Bush applauded Mrs. Altschuler for her tireless efforts and fantastic sense of humor.  She said that she once described her as a "Grand Dame" of Dallas but Mrs. Altshuler said, "That's fine but I would prefer to be called a Cute Young Thing!"  Mrs. Brinker applauded Mrs. Altshuler for her leadership and for bringing out the best in others.

The most touching moments of the event came when Mrs. Altshuler's daughter, Sally Sharp Harris, shared stories of her mother's caring heart.  She told us about the people who were hurting and struggling that her mom would read about in the paper.  She would cry over their situations and then go and visit them in the hospital or have them over for Sunday Supper.  She remained friends with them for many years.   Mrs. Altshuler's accomplishments have been talked about for years but the way she reached out to people with out any fanfare or any eyes watching her is a true testament to her sincerity and genuinely kind spirit.

When Mrs. Altshuler had her turn at the microphone she dazzled everyone in attendance by calling all of her charming grandchildren up to the stage.  She then shared adorable stories of her childhood and she had everyone laughing.  I can't think of a lady more deserving for such a prestigious award!

The luncheon closed with Mrs. Altshuler's grandson's singing their tribute song to her.  Their successful band is called Warren Charles they clearly adore their gramma!  To top it all of, today is her birthday so we all sang "Happy Birthday to Ruthie" at the end of the event.

Congratulations Mrs. Altshuler!  You deserve it!

2010 Special Guest Hostess: Jan Strimple

Join the SMU chapter of Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) and area alumnae at their annual Alpha Chi Couture fashion show. The ladies of Alpha Chi host this annual silent auction and fashion show that gives hope to victims of domestic violence through continued support of Genesis Women’s Shelter and Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. Come scope out the latest trends from Highland Park Village. The event will begin with a cocktail hour and silent auction, followed by models brandishing styles from Ann Fontaine, Tory Burch, Scoop, Vince, Rugby, and other retailers.

Treasures from Diego Rivera at the Meadows

As an Art History student at SMU was an amazing experience and I treasure all of the wonderful classes held at the Meadows Museum.  It has come a long way since I graduated in 1998!  What was once displayed in a carved out space inside the Arts Building is now at home in an impressive and grand building of it's own.  It is certainly worth the visit and I believe that it is truly one of Dallas' hidden gems.  Well, if you missed the Diego Rivera viewing party on Friday the 19th of June, don't fret.  You can still see all of the amazing Cubist Portraits and hear a special lecture.

July 16th or 23rd at 6pm you could catch the Thursday evening Lecture Series titled Diego Rivera and the Mexican Revolution by Dr. Luis Martin, Professor Emeritus of History, SMU

On August 20th at 6pm you can catch Dr. Mark Roglan, Director of the Meadows Museum, and his lecture, Diego Rivera and Spain (1907-1922).

On September 17th at 6pm you can hear Paloma Alarco, the Curator of Modern Paintings at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid teach about The Portrait Gone to Pieces: The Cubist Era in Paris.
