Festival of Joy to celebrate Indian culture with music, food and family fun - April 26 at Klyde Warren Park

 

Celebrating the sights, sounds and culture of India, the sixth-annual Festival of Joy is set for Saturday, April 26, at Klyde Warren Park (2012 Woodall Rodgers Fwy., Dallas). The family-friendly event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a vibrant parade, dancing, music and live performances throughout the day. Presented by the acclaimed East Dallas restaurant Kalachandji’s, the Festival of Joy brings together thousands of families, adults and dignitaries from across North Texas for a fun-filled day, teeming with bright colors, beautiful flowers and interactive exhibits focused on exploration and joy. Festival goers seeking culinary delights can enjoy a free vegetarian feast and a variety of ethnic vegetarian foods available for purchase.

The event culminates with an evening concert at 7 p.m. featuring The Mayapuris, a vibrant traveling party of conscious musicians. Raised in the mystic traditions of ancient India, the Mayapuris fuse the soul stirring experience of mantra music with exceptional musicianship in both eastern and western styles. They have toured across six continents propelled by their thunderous rhythm and soaring vocals.

The Festival of Joy, also celebrated as Ratha Yatra or Festival of Chariots, has its roots in the ancient Indian tradition. It has been observed annually for more than 3,000 years in the holy city of Jagannatha Puri in the South Indian state of Orissa, making it the world’s longest-running street festival. It is now held in major cities worldwide, including New York City’s Fifth Avenue and London’s Piccadilly Circus.

After the parade procession returns to Klyde Warren Park, guests can enjoy a free vegetarian feast, live stage entertainment, sample delicious regional Indian street foods, shop at an ethnic clothing bazaar, and explore exhibits celebrating the spiritual heart of India. From Ayurveda and yoga to traditional crafts, try-a-sari, mehndi, "ask-a-monk" sessions and more, attendees can immerse themselves in the rich cultural offerings of India.

And new this year, don’t miss the evening performance by popular Indian artist Gaura Vani (GARR-ruh VAHN-nee) at 7 p.m. who will perform a lively mix of Asian fusion music.

Presented by Kalachandji’s, the family-friendly festival brings together thousands of people for a full day of bright colors, culture, beautiful flowers and a free vegetarian feast. Ushering in the summer season with a colorful celebration of Indian culture and spirituality, the third annual Festival of Joy will take place on Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at Klyde Warren Park.

The free festival, presented by Kalachandji’s, Sewell Lexus and American Airlines, brings together thousands of families, young adults and dignitaries for a fun-filled day of bright colors, beautiful flowers and a free vegetarian feast, along with riveting music, dance and interactive holistic living and cultural activities.

The Dallas festival starts at 11 a.m. with a welcome ceremony at Klyde Warren Park, followed by a parade at noon through the Dallas Arts District, which returns to the park at 1:30 p.m.

The main stage will feature kirtan (musical mantra meditation) and bharat-natyam (classical Indian dance), and stalls will present Ayurveda, yoga, traditional crafts, vegetarian cooking demonstrations, cultural displays and more.

A free, multi-course vegetarian feast will be served, and many varieties of ethnic vegetarian food items will be available for purchase. New this year is Kalachandji Konnect, an opportunity to continue some of the festival experiences throughout the year at Kalachandji’s, which hosts cooking, yoga and meditation classes.

Klyde Warren Park Announces Construction of World's Tallest Interactive Fountain

 

Made possible by one of the most memorable Christmas gifts, Klyde Warren Park today announced construction will begin on a next-generation, interactive ‘super-fountain,’ planned with far taller and more exciting jets than any other in the world. 

Destined to become an iconic Dallas landmark, the fountain is funded by a $10 million gift from longtime Klyde Warren Park board member Nancy Best and her husband, Randy.  The Nancy Best Fountain will adorn the Pearl Street entrance of the Park. Designed by Los Angeles based Fluidity Design Consultants, it features a central island of three stainless steel “trees” from which water will pulse and soar to heights of more than 55 feet in the air. At the base of the fountain, children and adults are welcome to frolic in the shallow, highly reflective pool, turning Klyde Warren Park into one of the largest and most beautiful free water parks in Texas. Each evening, the fountain will come alive, fireworks-like, with colorful light shows, sending streams of shimmering, color-lit water high into the skyline, perfectly synchronized with high-fidelity, musical concert soundtracks. 

“The only way to describe this fountain is spectacular,” said Jody Grant, chairman of the board of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. “It will truly be unlike anything seen before. When you look at aerial photos of Dallas in the future, we firmly believe this is the ‘blimp shot’ you will see. It will be a signature structure that by day beckons children at play and by night delights visitors with a spectacular show, reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower light show in Paris.”

Design of the fountain is currently underway, with installation starting this summer. The Nancy Best Fountain is anticipated to be completed by December 2021. 

DSO and The Concert Truck Schedule

From mid-November through mid-December, the DSO and The Concert Truck will present collaborative community concerts across the city, featuring musicians of the DSO and other arts organizations. Concerts will be held outdoors with audiences and performers able to maintain a safe distance while enjoying live performances.

The Concert Truck, founded in 2016 by concert pianists Susan Zhang and Nick Luby, is a mobile concert stage that brings classical chamber music directly to communities. The Concert Truck travels all over the United States performing alone and with other musicians to a variety of venues and audiences. Join us on Thursday, May 16, 4-7PM at Klyde Warren Park for a relay-style, high-energy, heart-pumping, stationary cycling event. This fun, outdoor experience will include live music, some of the best cycle instructors in town and mission-related activities. All fitness levels are welcome!

Non-Profit Spotlight: Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Park has become an oasis in the heart of Dallas, providing connectivity between Downtown and Uptown. This unique space is unlike any park in the region.

 

It costs roughly $3.5 million to run the park each year, which is raised through private donations, corporate sponsorships, event rental revenue, and contributions from a PID (public improvement district). Klyde Warren Park is launching their first public fundraising campaign, "i heart the park," to celebrate how much we all enjoy Klyde Warren Park, as well as support one of the keys to its success — the park’s free programming. They hope to raise $50,000 through online donations, social media awareness, events in the park, and merchandising, in support of free programing.

DSO's First-Ever Live Concert Simulcast at Klyde Warren Park

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra will host a free live concert simulcast on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Klyde Warren Park. The concert will feature Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducting the Dallas Symphony in performance with acclaimed violinist Itzhak Perlman as soloist. The concert, simulcast live from the 2014 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Gala at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, will feature Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 by Ravel, Capriccio italien by Tchaikovsky, and Perlman joining the Dallas Symphony in the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Bruch.

 

“It is such a thrill to be able to share the musical excellence and excitement of the Dallas Symphony’s 2014 AT&T Gala with everyone in Dallas,” said Jan Miller, who with her husband Jeffrey Rich, is chairing the 2014 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Gala. “Itzhak Perlman is an icon. Jaap van Zweden is a superstar. Together with our Dallas Symphony they will present a memorable evening of beautiful music, and this simulcast will share that experience with music-lovers beyond the Meyerson.”

 

The concert simulcast will be the first in the history of the Dallas Symphony. Patrons may enjoy of the amenities and activities at Klyde Warren Park before the Gala Concert begins at 8:45pm. Following the performance, downtown Dallas visitors will be treated to a fireworks display in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Meyerson Symphony Center.

The Volunteer Center of North Texas is hosting a fun and inspiring event at Klyde Warren Park to introduce VOLY.ORG, the new and exciting interactive website powered by the Volunteer Center. VOLY.ORG makes it faster and easier than ever for area volunteers to connect with organizations that match their passions!

They will shine a bright light on volunteerism with dozens of local nonprofit agencies in attendance to showcase their mission and work. Several local officials, celebrities and entertainers will also make an appearance and volunteer their expertise by sharing their passion for service. Plenty of food and music will round out a festive, high-energy atmosphere.

The entire North Texas community is invited to join this unprecedented showcase of volunteerism. Help spread the word, help grow VOLY.ORG, and help overcome the challenge and grow volunteerism right here in North Texas!

Take Your Valentine to Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Park will host its annual Valentine's Day event with music, dancing, sweet treats and champagne on Friday, Feb. 14 from 6:30-10:00 p.m.

The Muse Family Performance Pavilion will be turned into a dance floor with a live performance from the Mad Men Swing Band at 7:00 p.m.

A dessert station will feature sweet treats from Savor, Klyde Warren Park's restaurant. Beer, wine and champagne will also be available for purchase throughout the evening.  Stay for dinner and dine at Savor, or enjoy quick fare from Relish. Food will also be available for purchase at the many food trucks in the park.

DCFA's 3rd Annual Architecture Tour Walk/Run

Dallas Center for Architecture’s (DCFA) 3rd Annual run/walk that encourages fitness will proudly feature some of the highest-quality architecture and public art that Dallas has to offer along its course. This is one of DCFA’s annual fundraisers, and last year’s edition attracting more than 1,000 runners and raised $25,000 for DCFA’s public programming.

The Form Follows Fitness 5K will take place on Saturday, February 22 and will begin at Klyde Warren Park, one of Dallas’ newest architecture icons, at 9:00 am. For those who prefer a shorter distance, there will also be a 1K available at 9:30 am. Registration will begin at 8:00 am and participants will have the option to partake in an organized, fun warm-up at 8:15 am. Registration as an individual or team is available online at www.FormFollowsFitness.com. 

The 5K route will take participants, including corporate teams, by some of the most inspiring structures that have been built in Dallas over the last quarter century. For those who would like to walk, there will be a guided tour so participants can learn as they exercise. The event will include views of buildings designed by internationally recognized architects that have been awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for their career-long contributions.

These architects include: Sir Norman Foster, Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House; I.M. Pei, Fountain Place and Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Hall; Rem Koolhaus, Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre; Renzo Piano, Nasher Sculpture Garden; Philip Johnson, The Crescent and Thom Mayne, Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

In addition to the main event, there will be activities in Klyde Warren Park, including sponsor displays and food trucks. A live band and other activities will offer various sorts of entertainment for exercisers and fans alike.
