Seven-year-old Stella Wrubel of
Dallas, Texas, was upset when she watched on TV the destruction
Superstorm Sandy wrought on Greater New York last year. Her parents,
Lucy and Steve Wrubel, told her that if she was really worried about the
people affected by the storm, there were things she could do, even in
Texas, to help.
The
first grader decided to raise money for the Red Cross—by selling
mistletoe. With her parents’ help, she created small, medium, large and
extra-large mistletoe branches, decorated with bows and bells. For three
weekends in a row, she sold them outside her Dallas home, raising a
total of $2,000.
Rather
than simply send a check, the family decided to fly to New York City.
On March 14, Stella handed the check to Christopher LaBianco, Greater
New York chief development officer, who accepted on behalf of the Red
Cross.
Later
this year, Stella plans to sell mistletoe for the Red Cross once again.
This time, she says she’ll ask her friends to help her, so they can
raise even more funds to help the Red Cross help those in need.
