On April 5th at the Renaissance Hotel in Richardson, the Miss Texas Organization held the 3rd Annual Women of Achievement Luncheon. Among the speakers and honorees was Dr. Shirley Cothran Barret for whom the Miss Texas Organization announced their Women of Achievement Award would henceforth be named. The award is given to women recognized by the titleholders as those of influence and achievement that have impacted their lives. Dr. Barret was the last Miss Texas to win the Miss America title in 1975. Dr. Barret was awarded scholarships through the Miss Texas and Miss America Organizations which fully funded her undergraduate degree, Master's Degree in Counseling and her PhD in Early Childhood Education & Family Counseling. Active in her community and church, Shirley has served in several volunteer capacities, including her local school board, Texas Speedway Children's Charity and various other charity boards. "I grew up in Denton, the daughter of a mother who had been orphaned at a very young age and worked in a restaurant which she ultimately owned. If a poor, shy librarian can win not only Miss Texas, but Miss America, every single one of you sitting in the audience have a chance if you work hard and stay focused on your goals."
