The Limelight - Education is Freedom

Education is Freedom is a 360-degree, comprehensive college readiness program dedicated to the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity for a higher education. Through hands-on, school-based programming, low income and disadvantaged students are able to view obtaining a college education as something they personally can achieve.

Providing students with a roadmap to complete high school and gain access to college, EIF impacts the academic success of urban youth through a comprehensive school-based program. EIF focuses on academic standards, including personal guidance, professional development, SAT/ACT and college preparation, mentoring, scholarship assistance and academic achievement incentives.

Mission: Education is Freedom focuses national attention and resources on students who have shown academic promise and leadership but need guidance and financial assistance to go to college.

The Founder
The youngest of six children, Jim Keyes grew up in a small, three-roomed home with no heat or running water. His father attended school through sixth grade, and his mother grew up in foster homes. Both worked in factories to support their large family. When he was 15, Keyes began working for McDonalds and became Shift Manager within a year. During summers, he would take on second and third jobs to save up for college. He used his earnings and a small baseball scholarship to attend the College of the Holy Cross, majoring in political science. He then earned his JD/MBA and was hired by Gulf Oil, eventually moving on to become the President and CEO of 7-Eleven. Keyes founded Education is Freedom in 2002, during his tenure at 7-Eleven.

“I credit education as the driving force behind my ability to rise above these circumstances and fulfill my potential,” Keyes said. “I founded Education is Freedom because I wanted every young student, regardless of race/ethnicity or socioeconomic status, to have the same access to education that transformed my life.”

The Mayor’s Intern Fellows is an 8-week summer internship program. The goal of this program is to introduce Dallas public high school students to employment opportunities for the purpose of preparing and motivating these students for higher education. The initiative allows students to visualize their future, see the possibilities that a quality education can afford, and acquire the tools to chart a course to realize their goals. As an incentive, the program also pays a competitive wage.
