Dancing With the Aspen Stars Benefiting the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

After going to events in Dallas throughout the years, it was a very fun treat to attend a fundraiser in Aspen. And wow can the Aspenites throw an event!!!!!!

Several Dallasites descended upon Aspen the last week in July to celebrate a good friend’s birthday with our Dallas friends who are summering there. It was an action-packed week. Community leader and generous philanthropist, Nancy Rogers hosted a table of fun friends from both Aspen and Dallas at the Dancing with the Aspen Stars event Tuesday, July 27. Benefiting the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, the event was held at the beautiful Viceroy Snowmass.

Magnificent mountains surrounded us while we sipped our refreshing specialty Stoli and Milagro cocktails on the patio that opened from the ballroom. Oh yes, and the temperature was in the 70’s so we thoroughly enjoyed the cocktail reception outside.

Over a yummy three course dinner, we enjoyed the program. Honorary Chairman Betty Weiss was awarded and thanked for her generosity to the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Aspen Arts.

Then the dance contest began. Local celebrities were paired with dancers from the ballet troupe. Bid sheets were placed on the table and after each couple performed their selected dance of a tango, samba, quickstep, waltz or salsa, guests were given the opportunity to write down a bid for that pair. The couple with the highest amount of money raised won. Such a clever fundraising way to involve the audience!

While we waited for the bids to be tallied, guests generously bid on five fabulous live auction items. Like Dallas, a few items went so high that the top two final bidders were each awarded the live auction package.

The crowd was also treated to a special appearance by Ashly Costa of the hit television show and professional ballroom dancer, Tony Pututua. Then, last year’s winner and Aspen philanthropist, Amy Phelan presented the 2010 winners Gary Sorensen and his partner Seia Rassenti with the winning trophy.

And like all the successful fundraisers, Dancing With the Aspen Stars had an amazing band. Boogielicious was a high-energy, versatile, fun band that played all genres of music. We were all out on the dance floor throughout the evening and into the night. Congrats Aspen on a spectacular fundraiser!!

Founded in 1990 by longtime Aspenite Bebe Schweppe, the Aspen Sante Fe Ballet is a nationally recognized dance company, a leader in the dance world in terms of repertoire, acquiring and commissioning work from top choreographers and one of the largest dance presenters in the country. Welcoming the best in dance in both Aspen and Santa Fe, education is a priority for the organization with schools in each of the cities. Cultural community activity is also included under the ASFB umbrella, with the popular award-winning Mexican folklore youth program, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Folklórico, offered in both locations.
