Form Follows Fitness 5K

Dallas Center for Architecture’s (DCFA) inaugural run/walk that encourages fitness will proudly feature some of the highest-quality architecture and public art that Dallas has to offer along its course.

The 5K will take place on Saturday, February 25 and will begin at One Arts Plaza, located at the intersection of Flora Street and Maple Avenue in the Dallas Arts District, at 10:00 am. For those who prefer a shorter distance, there will also be a 1K available at 9:30 am. Registration will begin at 8:00 am and participants will have the option to partake in an organized, fun warm-up at 9:15 am.

Registration as an individual or team is available online at FormFollowsFitness.com. Adults ages 19 and over will pay a fee of $25 for early registration; $30 during race week or $35 on race day. Children ages 18 and under will pay a fee of $15 for early registration; $20 during race week or $25 on race day.

The 5K route will take participants, including corporate teams, by some of the most inspiring structures that have been built in Dallas over the last quarter century. For those who would like to walk, there will be a guided tour so participants can learn as they exercise.

The event will include views of buildings designed by internationally recognized architects that have been awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for their career-long contributions. These architects include: Sir Norman Foster, Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House; I.M. Pei, Fountain Place and Morton H Meyerson Symphony Hall; Rem Koolhaus, Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre; Renzo Piano, Nasher Sculpture Garden; Philip Johnson, The Crescent and Thom Mayne, the under-construction Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

In addition to the main event, the restaurants at One Arts Plaza along with other sponsors will be providing food and drink specials. A live band and other activities will offer various sorts of entertainment for exercisers and fans alike.

9th Annual Facing Family Violence Conference

For too many individuals and children in Collin County and throughout Texas, domestic violence is a daily occurrence. The Collin County Council on Family Violence (CCCFV) is working to address this crisis head-on by sponsoring the Ninth Annual Facing Family Violence Conference this weekend - January 26th and 27th - at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus Living Legends Conference Center, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, 75074.

Designed for professionals who work in criminal justice, social services, healthcare and faith-based organizations, the conference offers exceptional training opportunities as well as cutting-edge education about current issues including the role of technology in family violence, bullying and harassment, and dynamics in family violence relationships. Continuing education credits will be available for professional disciplines.

Speakers include national, state-wide, regional and local experts and the two-day conference will present personal perspectives, professional expertise and the intervention models for law enforcement and treatment providers.

The Young Friends of the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas announced a Studio 54 theme for their ninth annual fundraiser benefitting the organization. Studio 54 will take place Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Geared toward the hip twenty and thirty-something crowd, this event will include cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, dancing to DJ Lucy Wrubel and event design by Todd Events. 4th Annual Fight for Air Climb

Go Vertical for a Great Cause!

The American Lung Association is presenting the 4th annual competitive stairclimb, Fight for Air Climb, in Dallas on February 18, 2012. This fun athletic event will challenge participants to climb the Renaissance Tower in downtown Dallas. Participants may run or walk each one of the 53 floors on their way to a celebration at the top.

Stairclimbs are emerging athletic competitions that take participants beyond the average run/walk event. These “vertical marathons” are growing in popularity. Participants can compete in the Fight for Air Climb as individuals or as teams. All participants will have their time calculated through an electronic chip-timing system. Teams will have the ability to start the race together and support one another during the climb. Water stations and rest floors will be available periodically throughout the climb if needed.

Through team sponsorships and donations, Fight for Air Climb participants will support the American Lung Association’s fight against lung disease. Proceeds from Fight for Air Climb will help find cures, protect clean air and promote smokefree kids.

Lung disease is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. 1 in 7 Americans will die from lung disease. Lung cancer is the single deadliest cancer, killing more women than breast and ovarian cancer combined.

Big Thought's 25th Anniversary Gala

Big Thought will kick off its 25th anniversary year with a gala celebration at The Adolphus Hotel on Saturday, Feb. 11th at 7:00 p.m. The evening will feature a seated dinner, entertainment and dancing. Organizers anticipate more than 250 guests will attend the celebration.

Founded in 1987 as Young Audiences of North Texas by Mitch Jericho and Edith O’Donnell, Big Thought has grown from a small arts agency to an organization focused on providing creative learning opportunities to hundreds of thousands of children and families each year.

Sprinkles Cupcakes will host the first ever Big D’s "Big News" Cupcake Wars on Saturday, January 21, at NorthCourt inside NorthPark Center. Gene and Julie, co-hosts of The New 103.7 Lite FM/KVIL will emcee the confectionary contest to determine which local personalities’ charity will take home a $5,000 grand prize.

Gene and Julie will kick off the event with a preliminary Q&A round, and each team’s answers will be factored into final scores. The following contenders will then have 30 minutes to frost, decorate and creatively display cupcakes in the spirit of their organization:

Herb Kelleher donates van to Ronald McDonald House

On January 4 at Southwest Airlines headquarters, Herb Kelleher received a large gift in his honor that wasn’t a plane, but something with wheels — three vans that were purchased for Ronald McDonald Houses.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities has long been a focus for Herb Kelleher and Southwest Airlines. When Southwest pilots heard the Dallas House was in need of new transportation, Southwest Airlines Pilots’ Association (SWAPA) set up a donation for pilots to give in Herb’s honor and received $104,343.78 to go toward new transportation for Ronald McDonald Houses in Dallas, Las Vegas, and Central Florida in addition to cash donations to be delivered to RMH locations in the San Francisco area, Phoenix, Chicago, Baltimore and Houston.

Herb Kelleher said, "You really made it an emotional masterpiece when you conceived the idea of giving the vans and the monetary contributions to the Ronald McDonald Houses. This handicap-accessible van is going to make their lives and our lives so much better. Those trips back and forth to the hospital are just going to be so much easier."

Also attending were Southwest Airlines’ CEO Gary Kelly and President Emeritus Colleen Barrett, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas Board Chairwoman Vera Bangs, along with many Southwest Airlines pilots and employees.

In 1985, Southwest Airlines took the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas under its wing and has contributed millions of dollars through its annual LUV Classic golf tournament. Employees have also contributed thousands of hours of service to cook meals, volunteer at The Trains at NorthPark and more.

Trinity River Art Contest for Children

The Trinity Trust, in partnership with DallasChild Magazine, announces a Trinity River Art Contest for children ages kindergarten through 8th grade to use their imaginations to illustrate things found in and around the Trinity River. Select drawings will be chosen and displayed during the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Celebration on March 2-4, 2012.

Dr. Gail Thomas, president and CEO of The Trinity Trust, said, “We want children to embrace the Trinity River with their most creative drawings. Images can be anything found in and around the Trinity River including the river, frogs, trees, birds, kites, turtles, canoes, snakes, ducks, bicycles, fish, the sun, spiders, the moon, people, buildings, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and more.”

Prizes will be awarded to winning images in each category: Kindergarten-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, and 7th-8th grade. The grand prize, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mentions will be determined by an esteemed panel of judges. One overall grand-prize winner will be awarded $100, along with the winner's school/art program receiving $1,000. For 1st place in each category, the winners will receive $75.00. For 2nd place in each division, winners will receive $50.00. For 3rd place in each division, winners will receive $25.00.

Elves in Disguise Home Make-Over

Earlier this month, HGTV Design Star Contestant and breast cancer survivor Leslie Ezelle joined Elves in Disguise to complete a holiday home makeover for a South Dallas family in need. Leslie and her group of elves transformed each room of the bare Section 8 housing to look like a dwelling you see in the home and design magazines!

After weeks of secretive meetings, selfless volunteer work, and generous donations, over 150 volunteers ensured this special family would have a Christmas to remember. When the family returned to the home on December 9th for the surprise reveal, they could not believe their eyes.

Families apply for the Elves in Disguise holiday make-over by completing an extensive application process and meeting a long list of other criteria, including being enrolled in self-improvement courses or a sanctioned mentorship program and possessing a visible willingness to "pay it forward." Although the recipients know they will receive something substantial, the magnitude of the extreme home make-over is a surprise.

This year's family is headed by a single mother of four. Abused as a child and as a young woman, she persevered to finish high school and eventually obtain an associates degree. As life was looking up for this dedicated woman, she became widowed. Today each day is a new struggle as she tries to cope with her children's long list of health issues and learning disabilities. Feeling blessed to be in an apartment rather than a shelter, the family lived with little furnishings and slept on unclean mattresses with no linens. Her teenage son keeps a baseball bat nearby so that he may protect his mom and three sisters. All four children dream of finishing high school and going to college, and their mother's dreams of completing her own college take a back seat to theirs. Despite the family's desperate circumstances, the young mother has made it her personal mission to be the protector of the neighborhood children. She walks them to and from the bus even in foul weather, and she hosts safe movie nights and prayer meetings in her apartment.

After celebrating a successful tour of Leslie's latest design star — Ann-E Girl, the 14X13 foot metal bra in honor of breast cancer awareness, she is thrilled to be a part of another project that supports the empowerment of women.

Elves in Disguise is supported by New Hope Foundation and donations from the community. This year's goal is not only to complete the family's apartment but also to raise money to fund scholarships for the mother and two of her children. Event chairman is Foundation director Suzi Petroff, wife of New Hope President, Kip Petroff.

Treasure Street Raises Over $1.2M for TSRH

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) celebrated its 90th birthday in October with more than 1,500 guests at Treasure Street, the hospital’s signature fundraising event. Friends from across the state joined in the momentous occasion that raised more than $1.2 million for the hospital. The 16th annual Treasure Street featured a live performance by Grammy-award winning artist Lee Ann Womack. Treasure Street honorary event chairmen were President and Mrs. George W. Bush, and the event chairmen were Carolyn & Karl Rathjen, M.D.

In celebration of the hospital’s birthday, a nine-foot-tall birthday cake served as the centerpiece for the room. A champagne toast and traditional singing of “Happy Birthday” complimented the festive event. More than 200 unique items were available in the silent auction ranging from gorgeous jewelry to kids items and unique sports packages for party guests to browse.

A highlight of the evening included an exhilarating live auction thanks to a donor who contributed a custom-made ranch and hunting buggy. After bidding reached an all time high on the item, he agreed to donate another buggy so that both bidders could receive one. The evening was a true celebration of the more than 200,000 patients the hospital has treated since it opened in 1921 and the generosity of the many friends who support the hospital’s mission. Treasure Street was established in 1996 by a group of TSRHC patient families with children affected by Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). Through the years, event proceeds have provided important funds for the hospital’s TSC Clinic. These funds support advances in research such as the development of a commercial DNA test for TSC, a landmark breakthrough that benefits all children. Thanks to the support of Treasure Street, the TSC Clinic is a model clinic throughout the world today.

Each year, more than 250 children and adolescents at Children's Medical Center Dallas are newly diagnosed with cancer, with more than 600 children receiving therapy at any given time. Through the work of the Children's Cancer Fund, the survival rate for all childhood cancers is now close to 80%, significantly better than the 50% chance a child was given 30 years ago. The increase in survival is a huge improvement for some cancers, but some other childhood cancers still have a less than 50% cure rate. By joining together, we can do more to find a cure for childhood cancer. A few days ago, I learned about a seven year old boy in Dallas named Zach Guillot. Zach is the oldest of three children. In February 2010, Zach was diagnosed with Leukemia AML. His little brother Jake was his “perfect” bone marrow match last year, at the age of three. Zach successfully completed his chemo therapy and received potentially life-saving stem cells from his brother via a bone marrow transplant. Everything was going okay until his family recently was struck with the devastating news that his AML has relapsed. Now Zach needs to find a (non-related) bone marrow donor match. I was so compelled by the story that I wanted to share it with you. Zach’s family and friends are quickly putting togethert his bone marrow donor drive THIS Sunday, December 11 from 12-6 at Parish Episcopal School - Midway Campus. Because Zach and his siblings are all at different schools, three school communities in Dallas are aware of the story, and there has been an outpouring of support for him. The key to Zach’s survival is finding a successful match, which requires awareness and donors. Anything that you can do to help spread the word about Zach's drive this Sunday would be incredible! 22nd Annual Deck the Hall Children's Holiday Concert

The Élan Circle of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League (DSOL) is proud to announce Deck the Hall, a holiday concert for children taking place at the internationally renowned Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. The DSO will perform holiday favorites for the entire family, and a sold-out crowd of 2,000 attendees is anticipated.

Deck the Hall is a winter wonderland of music and fun for the entire family. The Chairman’s Spotlight

Christine Mckenny is part of the Kids in the Loop foundation which is also part of The Gingerbread Stroll at Highland Park Village.

1.) Why is this cause so special to you? The Gingerbread Stroll combines all of my work experience into one event. After graduate school, I worked in social service non profit. During that time, I was employed at Genesis Women's Shelter and I started their annual luncheon. The event has grown into a wonderful fund raiser for Genesis! One never knows how big an idea may become! Following my work in non profit, I worked in residential real estate for ten years. I took an extended sabbatical when my daughter was born and was diagnosed with severe eczema. During my extended sabbatical, I started IN THE LOOP KIDS -- currently managed by an editor. I am selling residential real estate again and The Gingerbread Stroll, brings all of these experiences together -- children, charities, and houses, gingerbread houses! It will be great to donate 100% of the proceeds from the silent auctioned gingerbread houses to a children's charity each year! I have ideas to grow the event in the years to come.
2.) With the Holiday’s coming up, What is your favorite part about Dallas during the Fall and Winter months?
I love taking a carriage ride to view the Christmas lights with family and friends, as well as making an annual gingerbread house with my 5 year old daughter.

3.) How do you spend your free time when you are not working for a charity?
Free time usually revolves around my daughter's schedule -- soccer games, birthday parties, playing board games, and reading books before bedtime.

4.) With you being such an influential person within the community, who is it that inspires you to do bigger and better things?
I admire and respect my friend, Lynn McBee, who has been highly instrumental in helping The Gingerbread Stroll vision become a reality! She is a tireless leader for the organizations she supports and for our community. She is amazing! Yes, we have exchanged several 3am emails during the planning of The Stroll!

Model Home Design at Museum Tower

Three of Dallas’ leading interior designers have been selected to each design a model home in the prestigious, contemporary residential high-rise project Museum Tower - in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. The designs will illustrate the range of personal style and creativity that each Museum Tower homeowner can bring to their residence.

The three chosen designers are Emily Summers, Emily Summers Design Associates; Ann Schooler, Schooler, Kellogg & Company; and Marco French, Marco French Studio. The three featured homes, ranging in size from 2,100 to 3,700 square feet, will incorporate styles that feature contemporary, transitional and traditional treatments. The model homes at Museum Tower will be completed by early 2012.

Museum Tower will have 42-stories with 112 ultra-luxury condominiums envisioned as “sky-bound” estates, with nine floor plans ranging from a dramatic 1,600-spare foot pied-a-terre to a spacious full-floor of more than 9,000 square feet. Interiors will offer great rooms with hardwood floors, luxurious stone bathrooms and gourmet kitchens featuring Miele appliances. Museum Tower is sure to become a new icon in the expanding downtown Dallas skyline.

About the Designers

A nationally recognized designer with numerous awards, Emily Summers of Emily Summers Design Associates is known for her refined interiors and creative eye. Emily Summers Design Associates has consulted and contributed to the interiors at the Wyly Theater and The Winspear Opera House, while Summers herself is currently a member of the Building Committee at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Ann Schooler, founder of Schooler, Kellogg & Company, began her career leading groups to England and Virginia to study the great houses of Britain and their influence on American decorative arts. Schooler’s works have been featured in leading shelter publications and she was named one of the Four Under Forty, the four best designers in America under the age of 40, by Southern Accents magazine.

Marco French, founder of Marco French Studio, has been on the forefront of interior architectural design for 25 years, with 20 years of international experience working exclusively with five star properties. He is well known for interior projects including luxury residences in Dallas, Palm Springs, New York City, and throughout the East Coast.

2011 Children's Medical Center Holiday Parade

Bring your family and friends to the 24th annual Children's Medical Center Holiday Parade in downtown Dallas on December 3 at 10:00 am. Proceeds from the parade benefit the young patients treated at Children's. It is co-presented by Capital One Bank and Pizza Hut Inc. and is the largest annual event in downtown Dallas.

This year's celebrity performer is none other than Jordin Sparks, the artist who sang the opening theme song to Children's Med Dallas.

St. Jude Celebrates Another Year of Fundraising

Players including Tim Brown, Chad Campbell, Harrison Frazar & Lee Trevino kicked off the first of St. Jude's two annual fundraising events on October 17th at the St. Jude/Derek Harper Golf Classic. More than 200 additional golfers joined these notables at Stonebriar Country Club to help raise awareness and funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Best known for his chart-topping hits "Almost Home", "Red Neck Yacht Club", and "That's What I Love about Sunday", Craig Morgan headlined the second annual fundraiser on October 22nd —the St. Jude Evening Under the Star Party. Despite the neighboring World Series game at the Rangers Ballpark, 700 plus guests walked onto the field of Cowboys Stadium in Arlington where they enjoyed cocktails, dinner and a chance to bid on exclusive items during a live and silent auction.

Amy Vanderoef, Mistress of Ceremonies, led a lively presentation which included a few words from 16 year old local St. Jude patient Brittany Yeager. She shared that the guests in the audience, not Superman or any Cowboys or Rangers player, were her heroes.

These two events raised more than $620,000, and the proceeds go directly to St. Jude to help fund the research and treatment of children with catastrophic diseases. All research and treatment conducted at St. Jude is then shared freely with hospitals around the country and world including our local hospitals in the DFW metroplex.

This year's events honored Doug Brooks, Brinker International CEO, his wife Holly and the Chili’s Grill & Bar team for their longstanding support of St. Jude. Chili's has donated more than $40 million to date. Chili's overall efforts have, among other achievements, helped build a state-of-the-art-building named the Chili's Care Center, which houses the bone marrow transplant inpatient floor, the Department of Radiological Sciences, inpatient activity areas and research laboratories.

St. Jude Give Thanks. Walk.

One walk, 80 communities, thousands of children’s lives saved.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, members of the Dallas and Fort Worth communities will lace up their green shoe laces and join St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® supporters in 80 communities across the country for the St. Jude Give Thanks. Walk. ™, an exciting family friendly event that brings teams and individuals together over the holidays to raise money to support the children of St. Jude.

More than 1,200 participants are expected to join together in this exciting noncompetitive 5k at Fair Park in Dallas and the inaugural Fort Worth event at Ridgmar Mall, to officially kick off the national St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign. One local Fort Worth walk attendee already looking forward to the event is four-year-old Tyler, a St. Jude patient who is a survivor of a rare and aggressive tumor known as Desmoplastic Medulloblastoma.

Last year in Dallas alone, more than 800 people attended and raised $150,000. Local Dallas and Fort Worth sponsors include GE Energy, National Envelope, Fair Park, Fort Worth, Texas Magazine, Univision Dallas, Ridgmar Mall, Panaderia San Marcos, and many more.

Funds raised from the Dallas and Fort Worth events support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world's premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.

Voice of Hope Annual Fundraising Luncheon

Since opening its doors in 1982, the Voice of Hope Ministries has inspired educational excellence and services to families in the West Dallas community. Debbie Dunlap chaired the annual fundraising luncheon held on October 25 at the facility, attended by over 300 guests.

On this 16th wintry season, Southfork Ranch hosts the annual Ski Plano event on January 28, 2012. Join the Plano ISD Education Foundation for this extraordinary evening on the mountaintop! Cupcakes & Milk with Santa

Santa does love his sweets and visions of cupcakes have been dancing in his head ever since he discovered Sugar Queen Cupcakes at Stonebriar Centre!

To add to the merriment, magic and sweetness of the season, Santa is inviting all his little friends to come to the New North Pole at Stonebriar Centre and decorate Sugar Queen Cupcakes with him on Saturday, November 12. The party is from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and children can decorate a cupcake with the sprinkles and frosting of their choice. Then, when the decorating's done, Santa will give each one his "stamp of approval."

Tickets to Cupcakes & Milk with Santa are $10 per child, which will be donated to Operation Sweet 16, a campaign created by Tori Pimentel, a local teenager, to raise money to help U.S. soldiers and their families. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the 501 (c)(3) organization.

Zoo to Do Goes Hollywood

Zoo to Do 2011, held in the Giants of the Savanna and Wilds of Africa Plaza at the Dallas Zoo on November 5th was a huge hit. Everyone came decked out in Hollywood Safari Chic to celebrate the Zoo during its 20th Anniversary fundraiser. Throughout the evening guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres from Neiman Marcus, food tastings prepared by Honorary Chef Jim "Sevy" Severson and a team of 23 of Dallas' top chefs, and live music from Emerald City. The money raised from the evening is a major source of funding for the Dallas Zoological Society. The proceeds go directly towards daily operating costs for the zoo including education, entertainment and conservation of wildlife. Northpark Center is on Track for the Holiday Season!

This year Northpark Center will host another fantastic year of "The Trains at Northpark." This event welcomes guests of all ages to see the brightly colored trains and of course the beautiful Dallas skyline. All of the proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas which is an excellent facility that houses sick and injured children as well as their families during the hospital stay. Bank of Texas is also a long-time sponsor for the Ronald McDonald House and "The Trains at Northpark." The trains are located on the second level between Barney's New York and Nordstrom. Admission includes the cost of an adult $6.00, $3.00 for children ages 2-12, and finally all children under the age of 2 are free. The wonderful setup will begin on November 19th and run until January 1st. Hours of operation include Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This is an amazing tradition to start or a tradition that should be carried along the way through the Holiday season.

Maestro Jaap van Zweden named Conductor of the Year

Jaap van Zweden, music director for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, has been named Conductor of the Year by Musical America.

Maestro Jaap van Zweden has served as music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-2009 season. He received the honor for his work with the DSO and as guest conductor with some of the nation’s most prestigious orchestras - Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others.

Originally from the Netherlands, van Zweden entered The Juilliard School in New York at age 16, as a student of Dorothy DeLay. Van Zweden is very committed to bringing awareness and acceptance to the cause of autism, and in the Netherlands he has established the Papageno Foundation devoted to bringing music therapy into the homes of autistic children.

Van Zweden will formally receive the Conductor of the Year 2012 Award in New York at Carnegie Hall on December 5.

Chamberlain Performing Arts Annual Sugar Plum Tea!

Chamberlain Performing Arts will host its annual Sugar Plum Tea at 4:15 PM on Saturday, November 26, 2011 following the matinee performance of The Nutcracker at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas. The highlight of the tea, sponsored by Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm, will be the arrival of the Sugar Plum Fairy herself, accompanied by her Cavalier. This year, these roles will be danced by New York City Ballet Principal Dancers, Wendy Whelan and Tyler Angle. Tea guests will have the chance to meet these special guests artists and have their photographs taken with them.
Chamberlain's Sugar Plum Tea has been a favorite with families for the past nine years. They will present its annual production of The Nutcracker over Thanksgiving weekend at the Eisemann Center, presented by the Texas Instruments Foundation. Besides the distinguished dancers from New York City Ballet there will be over 150 local dancers in the production!

Trevor Rees-Jones Receives the 2011 Methodist Health System Folsom Leadership Award

Methodist Health System Foundation presented the 2011 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award to Dallas businessman and philanthropist Trevor Rees-Jones at the Hilton Anatole Hotel on October 5. Established in 2005, the award recognizes individuals whose demonstrated commitment and excellence in community leadership emulates the achievements of former Dallas Mayor Robert S. Folsom.

Jim Francis, event chair of the Folsom Leadership Award, welcomed 700 attendees and announced the evening’s surprise emcee. “It’s my privilege to introduce my close friend, who is also a great admirer of Trevor Rees-Jones and someone who President George W. Bush, our Honorary Chair, refers to as ‘the architect,’ my friend Karl Rove.”

Dr. Reverend Ron Scates, senior pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation followed by dinner. During dinner, chart-topping Texas vocalist and favorite of Trevor Rees-Jones, Randy Rogers, performed for the guests.

Local Masterpieces Showcased at Big Brothers Big Sisters Gala!

More than 1,000 children will be paired with a Big Brother or Big Sister thanks to guests at the Big Black Tie Ball: An Evening of Masterpieces held last Friday night at the Fairmont Hotel. The Schlegel Family served as Honorary Chairs for the event which raised more than $500,000 due in part to the success of bidding on artwork created by local artist Chris Judy and "Littles" in the program. The "masterpiece" themed event featured the work of local contemporary artist Chris Judy who worked with four "Littles" in the program to create a piece entitled "Color Dance" which was auctioned off at the end of the evening for $7,500.
Janet Bracken chaired the event, which was hosted by CBS 11's Teresa Frosini. The essence of mentoring was captured through the featured artworks of more than 60 "Littles".
For every $500 raised through the event, one child will be removed from the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list and matched to a caring adult mentor who will enrich, empower and encourage them to reach their highest potential.....creating a masterpiece!!!
