Major Success for the Annual Cattle Baron's Ball

Auction Chair Jennifer Dix with Louis Murad
Louis and Claire Murad

On behalf of Louis Murad, a local full-time charity auctioneer raised $770,000 for the American Cancer Society. The live auction was said to have raised $750,000 while the ball itself raised more money as a whole. Dallas is fortunate to host the world's largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Within the past 37 years, "The Cattle Baron's Ball" has raised $43 million which has earned a spot in Texas History. The auction included a brand-new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, which was auctioned off at a whopping $220,000. How amazing is it that while someone is driving around in this gorgeous vehicle we are saving so many lives who have fallen to cancer? Murad was quoted saying, “This year’s ball was a fantastic event, and I’m proud to help raise so much money for cancer research, most of all, though, I had a heck of a lot of fun.” To get in touch or have Louis host one of your auction events please visit his website, http://www.muradauctions.com. As well as his Twitter: @MuradAuctions.

"I Ski Plano" escalates at Neiman Marcus

Winter season has yet to begin, but the Ski Plano Committee volunteers have already unpacked their goggles and gear. Though they are busy designing avalanches, black diamond slopes, and 3D ski simulators, there are no snow-covered mountains in this community. Nonetheless, the team is hoping for a flurry of publicity starting with a new “I Ski Plano” campaign. All Plano ISD schools and students will be invited to participate by staging their own “I Ski Plano” pictures and videos.

Pictured left to right, Kathy Schell, Heather Webb, Tracy Tomson, Cece Liekar, Monica Shortino, Alicia Wanek, and Lesley Guinn

Committee members recently layered on parkas and scarves at Neiman Marcus Willow Bend, a long time sponsor of the Ski Plano annual event to be held on January 28, 2012 at the historic Southfork Ranch. Plano ISD Education Foundation Executive Director Monica Shortino said, “The 'I Ski Plano' campaign is a chance for the community to actively participate and proudly show support for the Foundation and its mission.”
Plano graduate and 2011 Tony Award winner, John Benjamin Hickey was recently named the honorary emcee for more than 800 expected guests and celebrities. Attire is a comfortable assortment of jeans paired with sweaters and two live bands will keep the dance floor packed all evening. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and Reserved Tables must be requested in advance.

The Chairman's Spotlight

RSVP Social Calendar Blog is going to be doing a "Chairman's Spotlight" on behalf of all of the influential men and woman we have around our community. Each blog will consist of a few questions that our Chairman's so graciously filled out to promote the event or charity that they are involved with so be sure to check out our future "Spotlights" as well as our first "Chairman's Spotlight," the ever so fabulous Elizabeth Showers.
The Chairman’s Spotlight
Elizabeth Showers
Photo Courtesy of Elizabeth Shower's Website
On October 25th at the Northwood Club Elizabeth Showers was the honorary chairman for The Power of Prevention Breakfast benifiting The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Why is this cause so special to you? The work that the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse does to educate and heal our community is greatly needed and so special to me because I recovered from alcoholism myself at age 20—it’s organizations like this that help make us aware that we are not alone and that there is a way to a better life.

With the Holiday’s coming up, What is your favorite part about Dallas during the Fall and Winter months? The weather! It’s the best weather of the year—and I love that we actually get to experience at least a little bit of the beautiful colors of Fall with the leaves changing…I also love to get to sit outside either on my back patio or on a restaurant patio for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. And I truly enjoy walking my dogs—it just feels so right when the temperature is so perfect like this—it’s uplifting!

How do you spend your free time when you are not working for a charity? Going to see movies with friends and sometimes by myself, going out to eat with friends and cooking with friends, reading a good book and my favorite magazine, National Geographic; I love to travel, I love spending time with my sister and my niece and nephews when possible (they are in Houston), I love getting away on long weekends with my friends, I love Sunday morning watching CBS Sunday Morning and not having to go anywhere (CBS Sunday Morning is my favorite show aside from Modern Family), and I love being with my dogs (I have a lot to learn from their unconditional love)

With you being such an influential person within the community, who is it that inspires you to do bigger and better things? Many people—primarily those of whom I am the closest to—those who work for me are great teachers for me, my best friends, my mentor in AA, my sister and parents, some of my business peers especially those in the Stagen Institute community—these are just a few of those who inspire me but these are the primary ones!

What is your favorite quote? A quote from Marianne Williamson that is a bit long (there are many who think it’s a Nelson Mandela quote, because he has been heard quoting Williamson):

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are more powerful beyond measure.

It's our light, not our darkness that frightens us most.

We ask ourselves, "who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small doesn't serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others don't feel insecure around you.

You were born to make manifest the glory of God. And it's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.

And when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

"Give Something that Means Something"

Gift of the Month
Photo courtesy of American Red Cross

With the holidays right around the corner, American Red Cross is giving people an opportunity to give a gift that helps others. Most people would rather receive a gift knowing that they helped someone else in need. With that being said American Red Cross is now providing an opportunity for you to donate to the foundation by helping out either a child in need or a family. By donating $25 to $1000 you will be giving shelter, food, supplies, and vaccinations to people all over the world. Every donation counts therefore give a donation on behalf of someone else and receive the thought that you were able to help someone out. Make sure you check out the link to the website and start saving lives this holiday season.
