The Chairman's Spotlight

Why is this cause so special to you? The work that the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse does to educate and heal our community is greatly needed and so special to me because I recovered from alcoholism myself at age 20—it’s organizations like this that help make us aware that we are not alone and that there is a way to a better life.
With the Holiday’s coming up, What is your favorite part about Dallas during the Fall and Winter months? The weather! It’s the best weather of the year—and I love that we actually get to experience at least a little bit of the beautiful colors of Fall with the leaves changing…I also love to get to sit outside either on my back patio or on a restaurant patio for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. And I truly enjoy walking my dogs—it just feels so right when the temperature is so perfect like this—it’s uplifting!
How do you spend your free time when you are not working for a charity? Going to see movies with friends and sometimes by myself, going out to eat with friends and cooking with friends, reading a good book and my favorite magazine, National Geographic; I love to travel, I love spending time with my sister and my niece and nephews when possible (they are in Houston), I love getting away on long weekends with my friends, I love Sunday morning watching CBS Sunday Morning and not having to go anywhere (CBS Sunday Morning is my favorite show aside from Modern Family), and I love being with my dogs (I have a lot to learn from their unconditional love)
With you being such an influential person within the community, who is it that inspires you to do bigger and better things? Many people—primarily those of whom I am the closest to—those who work for me are great teachers for me, my best friends, my mentor in AA, my sister and parents, some of my business peers especially those in the Stagen Institute community—these are just a few of those who inspire me but these are the primary ones!
What is your favorite quote? A quote from Marianne Williamson that is a bit long (there are many who think it’s a Nelson Mandela quote, because he has been heard quoting Williamson):
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are more powerful beyond measure.
It's our light, not our darkness that frightens us most.
We ask ourselves, "who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others don't feel insecure around you.
You were born to make manifest the glory of God. And it's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.
And when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
