Happy New Year!

New Years is such a wonderful time.  I love to make resolutions that I promise to spend the days leading up to the first of January intentionally breaking!  It is a time of fresh promises, optimism and great opportunity.  It is also a time for thoughtfulness and reflection.  For the last ten years, I have resolved to put more time and energy into the RSVPcalendar.com and the organizations it supports.  I am so proud of the enormous strides we made this year.  Our team, led by our editor, the hardworking and tenderhearted Haley Schulthies, has done a fantastic job of creating the blog and enhancing our Social Media efforts through Facebook and Twitter!  We have also hosted several breakfast events at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek and The Joule for non-profit professionals.  We can't wait to continue our efforts in 2011!

If you are a non-profit professional who would like to learn more about our events and services or if you are a passionate supporter of one of Dallas' charitable organizations, please reach out to us at haley@rsvpcalendar.com.

My mom gave me a fantastic box of Wisdom Cards by Mother Teresa in my stocking this year and one of her quotes seemed especially appropriate for this blog so I wanted to share it with you:

"Never be afraid of giving.  There is deep joy in giving, since what we receive is much more than what we give."

Happy New Year everyone!

Ebby Halliday 100th Birthday Celebration

Each and every birthday should be special, but a 100th birthday celebration should be an extravaganza, and that is exactly what is going to take place for Ebby Halliday's big century party!
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. is pleased to announce Ebby 100, the Ebby Halliday 100th Birthday Celebration benefiting this wonderful cause.
Halliday is not only a savvy businesswoman, but a volunteer extraordinaire in the Dallas community, yet her devotion seems to have no borders, nor does she lack youthfulness and giving. She stands by a quote said by her late-husband, which explains a lot about her character, "Do something for someone every day." That she does...
Come join in the festivities that the Steering Committee, led by Honorary Chairs President & Mrs. George W. Bush and Event Chairs Steve & Barb Durham, have worked tediously on with a solid committee for a night full of excitement!

The revelry includes a cocktail reception, fabulous seated dinner, a Dallas Symphony Orchestra concert with guest artist Mario Frangoulis, followed by a lavish dessert reception. The whole time, paying tribute to the lady of the evening.
The concert, honoring Ms. Halliday will provide college scholarships for Texas students administered by the Horatio Alger Association. Since 1984 they have helped their "heroes" of the future with over 70 million in scholarships.
What a fun sounding evening, so be sure to save-the-date! It will surely be a beautiful equivalent for an outstanding lady who has devoted so much to local community and beyond. This certainly will be an event you do not want to miss.

Help Fight Hunger In Our Community

We have a strong community and Walmart is putting that to task by helping to fight hunger. Millions of Americans do not receive adequate nutrition, the national average being 9.2%, our community ranks in at a staggering 18.6% of families that cannot afford regular meals. Walmart has committed to donate $2 billion dollars by 2015 for the fight against hunger which will help so many people in need. This year they are letting the communities decide (that is you and me), so come on Dallas/Fort Worth! All they are asking is for each person to browse the communities selected and see who you think needs the money the most. $1 million will go to the one with the most votes. The next five most supported will receive $100,000. Can you imagine how much $1 million would help the hunger problem here? Vote, vote, vote...

There are more than one way to make Dallas receive the $1 million, it is simple and easy to do:
  • CLICK HERE to select the community you think needs the money the most. I know this is not something we desire to win for a normal competition, but we need the extra funding, so GO DALLAS!!
  • Get on your Facebook account and "Like" that community. Each "like" counts as a vote, so make sure to share it with all your friends addicted to FB, too!
  • Spread the word, volunteer or donate your time around town. This is a problem that can be tackled -- tell everyone in our community to help raise awareness for hunger problems in our beloved country and hometowns.
Thank you Walmart for helping all of us fight for hunger!
Deadline is December 31, 2010.

NTFB Thanks Stanley Korshak!

North Texas Food Bank sends a warm thanks to Stanley Korshak for their recent efforts in raising $4,55o for the Food 4 Kids program. Crawford Brock personally presented the check to NTFB.

Katherine Perot Reeves, Crawford Brock, Joyce Goss

Texas has the second highest rate of hungry children. 1 in 4 Texas children live in food-insecure households, without access to adequate, nutritious meals on a regular basis. Food 4 Kids supplies participating schools with nutritious, kid-friendly, self-serve food designed to fill a backpack and feed a child over the weekend during the school year. This program is made possible by the generosity of donors like Stanley Korshak.

The Limelight - Gifts for Moms

Moms know how important holidays and special occasions are to their children. Every effort is given to make each moment special. Unfortunately for single moms, there is often no money remaining after providing for their children during holiday season. The holidays can be lonely and depressing. Gifts for Moms wants to help and needs your assistance as well.

Christmas Gift Drive - Needs

This year, the goal is to distribute at least 500 gifts to single mothers. Gifts for Moms needs new donated gift items valued at over $25. They would like to reward these mothers with something to make them feel special, such as bath robes, slippers, perfume, purses, gift certificates, movie tickets, clothing, and jewelry. In addition to gifts, they need wrapping paper and bows, as well as food for the Christmas party where they will be distributing gifts. Cash donations are also appreciated.

Gifts for Moms needs volunteers to deliver gifts, babysit at the party, find new gift drop locations, wrap gifts, and donate food for the 250 attendees at the Christmas party on December 19. They would love to find a national retail partner to possibly expand the program nationwide. The success of the Gifts for Moms program depends on the generosity of the people in our North Texas Community.

Beyond Christmas… Their work goes on after Christmas. The organization serves as an excellent resource for women in crisis. They help women get food, clothing, pay their utilities and find employment. Through their social media network, they distribute information and seek help from the 5,000+ on their distribution list.

This year, Gifts for Moms, will expand to celebrate moms’ birthdays! They will be partnering with local businesses to provide gifts, baked goods and flowers to be delivered to single moms on their birthdays. Please join them in this effort.

Gifts for Moms also seeks any information and resources to help single mothers and their families, job leads, babysitting and more. By helping these struggling mothers, we help their children. When we help children, we help heal the world.

For information or questions, contact Stephanie Ward at giftsformoms@rocketmail.com or 214-774-2194.
