The Limelight: Slant 45

What is SLANT 45?
Service Learning Adventures in North Texas

The organization was formed by The North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee and Big Thought. It is a youth education program that works with school districts throughout the region to reward its young participants. SLANT 45 was named after an actual football play used by Daryl Johnston and Emmitt Smith for the Dallas Cowboys.

Dedicated to making imagination a part of everyday learning, Big Thought is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations focused on improving public education through creative learning. The combination of Big Thought’s credibility and the Super Bowl’s appeal create a winning team.
From now through December 2010, in one of the largest communitywide service-learning projects in U.S. history, an estimated 20,000 elementary-age students will log a combined 45,000 hours of service across North Texas. These youngsters, representing all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and every corner of North Texas, will undertake projects large and small. Some will assist those in need or beautify neighborhoods. Others might stage a play for fundraising purposes. A few may even undertake the development of a mural project simply because it lifts the spirit.

Area school districts and private school systems are being enlisted to recruit groups of students and volunteers in communities across North Texas to participate in SLANT 45. Examples of these groups include neighborhood associations, church groups, classrooms and school clubs, PTAs, community-based organizations, scout troops, youth athletic teams and corporate groups.

Big Thought supports the program with materials to ensure that life skills are realized as learning outcomes within individual service-learning projects. Tools include workbooks, thought-starters for idea generation, key questionnaires, etc., for the children and adult project leaders of individual service projects.

After the hard work has been completed, it will be time to celebrate! The children who brought these unique projects to life will be invited to a special event in January 2011. More than 20,000 children and their adult leaders will join Big Thought and the Host Committee at a private event where they will be congratulated for their accomplishments and celebrated for their commitment to their community.

To learn more about the concept of service learning and how you can get involved with SLANT, visit http://www.slant45.org/

The Limelight: AIDS Interfaith Network

AIDS Interfaith Network was created in 1986 by a group of religious leaders to provide spiritual and emotional support services to persons living with HIV/AIDS. These individuals worked to educate clergy, churches, and their congregations about HIV/AIDS as a means to further outreach to those struggling with the disease. After recognizing the growing need for practical support in addition to spiritual nourishment, AIN has recruited and trained volunteers from local churches, synagogues, and other faith organizations to provide in-home, non-nursing support as well.

AIN has become one of the largest HIV/AIDS service providers in Dallas. Continuing in its mission to provide practical, emotional, and spiritual client support demands a great financial responsibility. AIN has grown to sustain various client service programs, additional staff members and additional volunteers.

If you’d like to donate your time as a volunteer or to make a financial contribution, email Blake Peery at bpeery@aidsinterfaithnetwork.org. AINS and its client service programs are in need of volunteers in any of the following areas:
- Care Team Volunteers offer practical home chore assistance, and/or emotional, and spiritual support through hours of in-home contact and care.
- The Buddy Project focuses on longer-term companion contact and interaction that emphasizes psychosocial support but may also include practical support.
- The Pastoral Network of pastors, ministers and lay ministers offering pastoral contact.

You can also SAVE THE DATE and plan to attend a unique fundraising event for the benefit of AIN and its support services. Imagine an afternoon transported away from the economic stresses of today to an era of bursting affluence, decadence, prosperity and Red Hot Jazz – The Roaring Twenties. That’s what guests of “The Great Gatsby…Get Your Flap On” will experience.

SAVE THE DATE: The Great Gatsby…Get Your Flap On
Sunday, September 26th
2:00pm to 6:00pm
Union Station

Volunteers are needed to help on the Brad Paisley tour! They'll be at all 34 tour dates this spring and summer and need a big crew of passionate clean water campaigners to help them out! Great volunteer opportunity for teens, groups (up to 10)

The Limelight: In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center

Believing that one person on a mission can make a difference and help better our world, Vicky Keahey, a veterinary technician established a non-profit organization that rescues and protects stray and unwanted exotic felines. In response to this past week’s news coverage on bobcat sightings in downtown Dallas and residential areas near the Addison Airport, I thought it be it would rather timely to feature today’s limelight on In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for rescued exotic felines and sharing Vicky’s rescue experiences with others.

With new housing developments and new commercial centers sprouting every which way, many bobcats are being displaced from their homes and are wandering into residential neighborhoods. Since bobcats don’t prefer to interact with humans, it’s more unnerving than hazardous…as long as you keep your distance from these stray cats.

Because exotic cats are not your average house cat, Vicky did her homework by working closely with the Texas Parks and Wildlife department to learn the proper care, maintenance and embraced the need to form mutual love and respect between her and her rescued felines. The organization proudly stands behind its mission to rescue mistreated exotic cats and provide them with a lifetime of excellent care while also providing education to the public and its residential communities about their much needed maintenance and protection. In-Sync Exotics continues fundraising efforts to support the rescued felines and to further education through its community outreach.

In-Sync Exotics is run almost entirely on volunteer labor and assistance is always welcome. If you would like to volunteer your time to help these magnificent animals, please contact volunteer coordinator, Chemyn Reaney at creaney@insyncexotics.com. You must be at 13 years of age with parental consent and adult supervision to volunteer.

Fulfilling their mission and goals to rescue mistreated and/or displaced cats and provide them with a lifetime of excellent care is an expensive labor of love. It costs $91,000 a year to feed the animals and another $15,000 for veterinarian care in addition to the expenses for utilities, enrichment, equipment and supplies.
You can make a one-time donation by sending your tax-deductible contribution to:
In-Sync Exotics
PO Box 968 Wylie, TX 75098
